04/23/15: Facebook hits $3.53B in revenue, $3.32B ad revenue; Aziz Ansari, Parks and Rec writer creating new Netflix series; IAB: Digital ads generated $49.5 billion in revenue in 2014

In Facebook’s earning’s call yesterday, the social network reported that 1.44 billion people logged into Facebook apps or the website at least once a month, and nearly two-thirds of them visited daily. FB announced $3.54 billion in revenue this the quarter, a 42 percent hike from the $2.5 billion from the same period a year ago. However, it fell short of the $3.56 billion that Wall Street originally predicted. The company’s advertising revenue increased 46 percent, to $3.32 billion.


Parks and Recreation
’s Aziz Ansari and P&R writer Alan Yang were tapped to create a new half-hour Netflix comedy. The ten-episode series is set to star Ansari, Archer’s H. Jon Benjamin, Tim and Eric’s Eric Wareheim, former SNL castmember Noel Wells, Lena Waithe (The Comeback) and Kelvin Yu (Popular).
In more Netflix news, original series Daredevil has been renewed for a second season. Douglas Petrie (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Marco Ramirez (Orange is the New Black) will lead production for the new season with Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) as the main character. Netflix just released the first season on April 10 as part of its deal with Marvel Television and ABC Studios.


Oxygen hosted its first-ever premiere party broadcast in real time on Twitter’s Periscope for the series debut of The Prancing Elites Project. The Periscope stream featured real-time Q+A’s with the cast, Tweets sourced throughout the stream, a live dance performance, and cast reactions/thoughts on key episodic moments as they viewed the premiere concurrently with the audience. The Periscope stream was distributed via Oxygen’s Twitter and shared on Facebook for fans to re-watch following the show’s premiere.
The results are in: Comcast’s third annual Xfinity Watchathon Week saw customers catch up on more than 56 million hours of shows. During the week of April 6, Xfinity TV customers checked out series for free on Xfinity On Demand 13 per percent more than last year’s 50 million hours recorded; Xfinity TV Go app use during the week went up 64 percent this year. In addition, for the first time, Xfinity On Demand exceeded one million consecutive streams on both Friday and Saturday of Watchathon. Viewers were encouraged to visit the new Watchathon Headquarters site to plan their week; they can also chat on Facebook and Twitter by using #Watchathon hashtag.
The fourth season of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta debuted on Monday and topped the social charts with a total of 16 national trending topics; the @LoveHipHopVH1 Twitter account grew by 10K followers during the episode to reach a total of 319K total followers. VH1 also ramped up the show’s social presence when it rolled out a 30-minute Afterparty with castmembers after the premiere.

Digital ads generated $49.5 billion in revenue last year, according to the annual report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Search advertising was responsible for $19 billion and 38 percent total gross; Display advertising brought in 27 percent total gross; and mobile advertising came in third, with 25 percent of the total gross. Online video advertising rev increased from $2.8 billion in 2013 to $3.3 billion in 2014, with $1.5 billion generated between the first half of the year and $1.8 billion between July and December. “Marketers clearly recognize that consumers are leading mobile-first lives and are investing their ad dollars accordingly,” IAB CEO and President Randall Rothenberg said.
Ad tech company Fyber acquired Falk Realtime for $11.5 million in cash and shares. Falk Realtime will enhance Fyber’s programmatic stack including the integration of Falk Realtime’s ad server and programmatic ad exchange. New functionalities will include private marketplaces, running programmatic direct campaigns as well as direct sold and cross promo campaigns. The entire Falk Realtime team will join Fyber and founders Erwin Plomp and Henrik Basten will have roles on the Fyber management team.


Live TV may be losing its luster. According to a new study from Deloitte, about 56 percent of those surveyed stream movies and 53 percent stream TV shows on a monthly basis, compared with 45% of those who prefer to watch TV programs live. For TV consumers ages 14-25, 72 percent believed streaming video is one of the most valuable services, versus 58 percent who said the same for pay TV. About 80 percent of Generation X (32-48) opted for pay TV and 47 percent chose streaming among the most valuable services; 89 percent of Baby Boomers picked pay TV and 43 percent chose streaming. Millennials either cancelled their pay-TV services (25 percent) in the last 12 months or haven’t had one for more than a year. An independent research firm surveyed 2,076 U.S. consumers online from Nov. 3-19, 2014 for Deloitte’s annual Digital Democracy Survey.


Former Xbox Entertainment Studios president Nancy Tellem has joined interactive storytelling startup Interlude. She will be the company’s Executive Chairman and Chief Media Officer. "I really believe that we’re at the point in our business that we have to create a different video experience for the millennial audience," said Tellem. She ran XES for two years before Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shuttered the studio with the restructuring and layoff of 18,000 employees.
Digital marketing agency Organic Inc. promoted Chris Kelly to Chief Creative Officer after Wells Fargo announced yesterday that Organic was awarded the digital creative business. Kelly was previously Executive Director in the New York office. Prior to Organic, he was Creative Director at Wunderman, leading accounts including Citibank, Dell, Kodak, Land Rover and Nokia.
