Think all kids animation is happening on the West Coast? Think again. NY-based studio FlickerLab is brewing up a bevy of content for children’s media outlets, including a new Dora the Explorer game for Nickelodeon that will hit the market later this year. "We’ve been doing a lot of inventing and expanding," says FlickerLab founder Harold Moss, including the creation of the studio’s own kids cartoon-making tool kit, which it’s folding into its digital publishing platform.
To keep up with expanding workload, this week the studio promoted three execs: Motion graphics artist and former intern Tibo Charroppin has been named junior creative director; Greg Kaplan is elevated to technical director; and Zartosht Soltani is promoted from broadcast and animation designer to art director and hired former Sesame Workshop exec Tom Chorlton as a producer overseeing content including the recent promo for Animal Planet’s Tanked.
As well as eyeing original series development for kids networks, FlickerLab recently developed an animated series for Kidshealth.org, How the Body Works, where each episode focuses on a different body part. The site draws more than a million unique visitors a day. "We all want to get series on Nick, Disney and Cartoon, but when you look at the audience we’re getting on the series, the aggregate numbers are bigger in some cases," says Jordan Geary, head of production and development.
Kids are the pickiest eaters, so they make the perfect critics in Canadian cross-platform YTV‘s new series Cook’d. Each episode of the show, premiering May 20 at 7p, features a trio of cooks competing to win over the petite judges by preparing dishes you wouldn’t find in your average school cafeteria. We’re talking escargot and brussel sprouts. One chef wins the Silver Spoon; the others get Cook’d-i.e., dunked in a giant soup pot. "We’re excited to launch a series that gives kids the power to taste and ultimately choose the foods they like best," says Jamie Piekarz, director of content at Corus Kids, which owns YTV. The series kicks off with a trio of five-star celebrity chefs from Toronto’s top dining establishments. After each ep, a PSA featuring a kid judge encourages viewers at home to support local food banks as well as Canada-wide initiative Corus Feeds Kids.
The second season of Tree Fu Tom launched yesterday on Sprout, just in time for Earth Day, and will continue airing at its regularly scheduled times of weekdays 8a, 11a and 2:30p; and weekends at 6:30a, 11a and 2:30p.

Boys and their toys. WWE is drumming up social media support with its Be A Superstar At Toys R Us contest through Friday. Fans can visit their local Toys R Us store, take a photo of their favorite WWE toy and post it on Instagram labeled #TRUSuperstar. Twenty-five winners will be chosen at random to receive $100 gift cards; one grand winner will get a $1,000 gift card. WWE announced the contest on RAW.
April is Financial Literacy Month, and fans of Warren Buffett’s Secret Millionaires Club series and brand are getting some extra reading material and merch. Genius Brands International is broadening the Club’s reach with the launch of a new online store (secretmillionairesclubshop.com), developed in partnership with relentlessGENERATOR. The Secret Millionaires Club online store provides direct access to products extensions including Warren Buffett’s Secret Millionaires Club– Business in a Box, an interactive play kit containing toys, activities and DVDs, as well as a booklet with business tips from Mr. Buffett himself.
In celebration of Earth Day, PBS Kids launched a new web-original property called Plum Landing. Plum Landing follows the adventures of Plum, a video game designer from the desolate Planet Blorb, who longs to experience nature. The cross-platform adventure is designed to entice kids ages 6-9 about environmental science by using animated and live-action videos, hands-on activities, web games and a free app. The app, Plum’s Photo Hunt, enables photo-taking and sharing as kids head outdoors to complete more than 36 different missions.
Disney XD yesterday launched its Gravity Falls Mystery Shack Attack strategy game on select Android devices in Google Play and Kindle Fire in the Amazon Appstore. In the game, Li’l Gideon calls upon his minions from the great beyond to scare Dipper, Mabel and Grunkle Stan out of Gravity Falls; players are called upon to help out.
Max & Ruby and the Berenstain Bears are headed for the tropics. As part of a new partnership with Memories Resorts and Royalton Luxury Resorts, both offered exclusively by Sunwing Vacations in the Canadian market, the Nelvana Enterprises characters are checking in to the Caribbean and Central America. Each resort is offering live character experiences and themed amenities based on the brands. At Royalton Luxury Resorts, in Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico, bunny siblings Max & Ruby are entertaining kids through a host of live experiences and interactive activities. The Berenstain Bears appear at Memories Resorts in Cuba, Dominican Republic and Bahamas, with live appearances and a country bear jamboree.
PGS Entertainment chalked up more deals for the animated series Chaplin & Co., produced by Method Animation and commissioned by France Televisions and Rai Fiction. The series is now airing in more than 100 territories, including new deals with RAI (Italy), RTVE and Canal Panda (Spain), TV2 (Norway), LRT (Lithuania) and Globosat (Brazil). The series is based on the antics of the silent-film-era star, his slapstick humor updated for today’s kids through CGI inspired by classic cartoons such as Mister Magoo and Tom & Jerry.
Former NBCU exec Nancy Cohen joined BabyFirst aboard as SVP, sales & sponsorship. Cohen’s hiring comes a week after the network named Mary Jeanne Cavanagh EVP, advertising sales. Cavanagh most recently headed ad sales operations for UP TV, ASPiRE and Sportsman Channel. Cohen’s background includes stints at NBCU, Oxygen Media, MTV Networks and National Geo.
