NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

HBO acquired the Vimeo Original series High Maintenance. The series first premiered on Vimeo when creators Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfield released the initial episodes in 2013 free of charge; last year the streaming service partnered with the duo to debut the second season exclusively for the Vimeo On Demand platform. It has since become a top seller on the VOD service. CEO Kerry Trainor said, "For HBO to pick up the next season is a testament to this incredible show and we look forward to continuing to support it."

Fandango will kick off its fifth original digital series I Love Movies as part of the company’s largest promotional campaign. Starting May 6, the summer long program will feature celebrity pro-social events, VIP movie screenings, festival sponsorships, social media openings and TV ads. Airing across Fandango’s Movieclips YouTube channel, Hulu, Roku and Samsung’s Milk Video Service, I Love Movies will feature interviews with cultural influencers outside the film industry on their favorite movie memories. First guests will include NBA All-Star Dwight Howard, Reba McEntire, Tony Hawk, five-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, Larry King, rock legend Slash, Shaun Robinson and country music artist Darius Rucker also, the Fandango app for the Apple Watch will launch this Friday, in time for the Avengers: Age of Ultron to hit theaters. The app will let moviegoers bring up the mobile barcoded ticket after purchase on an iPhone, which can then be scanned for admission, among other features.

OWNZONES launched a new channel for subscribers called VeryFunnyTV. The channel features classic cartoons from Popeye and Looney Toons favorites Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny, in addition to comedies such as The Beverly Hillbillies and The Dick Van Dyke Show. The $1.99 a month channel will also incorporate beloved series Our Gang, Jack Benny and Petticoat Junction.

iHeartMedia revealed the line-up for its annual iHeartRadio Summer Pool Party on May 30, including performances by artists Nick Jonas, Chris Brown, Kelly Clarkson, Nicki Minaj, Shaggy and Echosmith. The special will stream on Yahoo Live at 8p PT on May 30, and will be broadcast on The CW Network on June 11 at 9p ET.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Video tech platform provider Kaltura unveiled the new turnkey "big screen" experience for Amazon Fire TV, with its HTML5 web app. The app will let Kaltura customers publish video content from within Kaltura directly to Amazon Fire TV through Amazon’s recently announced Web App Starter Kit for Fire TV for web developers. In addition to Amazon’s OTT device, Kaltura’s Player Toolkit supports Chromecast, native mobile applications as well as desktop and web browsers. The player also runs natively within Twitter feeds and Facebook news feeds.

RESEARCH

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) unwrapped the results of its new research The Changing TV Experience: Attitudes and Usage Across Multiple Screens. The online survey was conducted by Vision Critical’s Media & Entertainment Practice on behalf of the IAB from January 19th to January 21st, 2015, among a sample of 651 adults. Key findings include:
Opinion on Ads: 40 percent of connected TV owners considered commercials on these platforms to be less intrusive than standard TV ads.
Streaming Increase: 35 percent of connected TV owners are streaming more video to their TV than a year ago. However, one in four smartphone and tablet owners, and one in five computer owners say they stream the same amount compared to the year prior.
Multiple Device Use: 78 percent of U.S. adults simultaneously use another device while watching traditional TV, with browsing the internet being the most popular activity and smartphones as the predominant second screen.
Multiscreening Increase: 40 percent of smartphone users said they have increased their multiscreen device activity over the past year.
