NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

With less than a week away until the Supreme Court case, Aereo is making its customer base as aware of the battle as possible. On the new site ProtectMyAttenna.org, Aereo is posting legal opinions, briefs, and the ability for customers to register directly for updates as the case unfolds. "The broadcasters are asking the court to deny consumers the ability to use the cloud to access a more modern-day television antenna and DVR in order to protect what they believe are their most lucrative business models," it says on the site. The hearing begins April 22nd.

Capitalizing on the success of telenovela El Senor de los Cielos, which averaged 2.3 million viewers nightly and generated over 35 million page views, Telemundo is launching a seven-part, mid-season web series to bridge the freshman season cliffhanger with the unprecedented upcoming second season. Two digital chapters a week starting Tuesday, April 22 lead up to the complete full-length "secret episode" available on Friday, May 9 across all Telemundo digital and social platforms, meant to "super-serve our audiences on digital platforms," Peter Blacker, EVP, Digital Media & Emerging Businesses, tells Cynopsis. "The storytelling is on par with anything we have created for primetime television because it was created with the same primetime team, working in tandem with our digital and social experts. The end result is a unique digital experience that will drive excitement for the franchise across all platforms."

Digital media male-focused company Woven acquired men’s news and entertainment publisher UPROXX yesterday. The deal will further expand Woven’s original video and editorial content for its current 85 million monthly users with UPROXX’s 5-Second Films and lifestyle news coverage. "UPROXX offers a mixture of cutting edge editorial and video content with a loyal user base making it a perfect complement to Woven’s business," Woven CEO Scott Grimes said. "For our advertiser partners, this is a great opportunity to reach a highly engaged male audience on one of the most culturally relevant sites." Additionally, Woven appointed Colin Digiaro as President. He previously co-founded and served as COO of the Social Gaming Network (SGN).

Netflix and one of the world’s largest telecom providers, Vodafone, may be in talks to bring the service to mobile subscribers. Bloomberg reports the agreement would give Vodafone subs free access to the streaming service. Vodafone most recently struck deals with Spotify and Sky Sports. Neither company commented.

Mindshare North America and The Weather Company announced a non-exclusive partnership, with the media agency using TWC’s WeatherFX data platform to assist with media decisions using real-time weather insights and triggers. "There is a clear correlation between weather and purchase decisions in many categories," said Bob Ivins, Chief Data Officer, Mindshare. "Linking TWC’s current and predictive data with algorithmic research findings related to weather-related behavior allows us to shift relevant media to the right person in the moment it will resonate most."

CONTENT MEDIA

AOL‘s web entertainment talk show The Lowdown with Diana Madison has been picked up for a second season. The show had a 30 percent increase week after week, and finished the first season at 3.36 million views. The host, Diana Madison, is the host of the nationally syndicated show The Lowdown as well.

YouTube‘s daily notable video series YouTube Nation hit more than a million subscribers just three months after launch. "[The channel] has an obligation to present the videos that everyone is talking about, but we also strive to be the experts of the content library," Executive Producers Steve Woolf and Zadi Diaz told TubeFilter. "That means surfacing the gems that might get missed, identifying awesome new creators as they’re just getting started and revisiting classics that newer generations haven’t seen yet."

BBC is debuting the full season of BBC Three show on its iPlayer before it premieres on TV for the first time. Australian comedy series Jonah From Tonga will be available starting May 2 for 48 hours in its entirety before it airs on BBC Three on May 8. Last month, BBC announced the channel would go entirely digital by fall 2015.

The latest Game of Thrones ep made piracy history this week. Deadline reports more than 193,000 BitTorrent users shared a copy of the ep, and 1.5 million downloaded it within the first 24 hours of the Sunday premiere. The HBO show is notorious for its piracy quotient, with the previous record set at 171,500 shares from the same file of GOT’s season three finale.

Horror-themed YouTube channel BlackboxTV (around 600,000 subs) will be the home to Everlast, the sequel to last year’s short film, First Impressions. The VideoInk reports BedRocket Media Ventures and Ketchum Labs produced the new martial arts horror film, and stars Viner Kevin McNamara. Everlast is expected to debut in June.

Yahoo-ABC News Network took top spots on highest desktop page view traffic and unique viewers according to a new comScore report. The network delivered 2.4 billion page views to more than 77 million unique visitors worldwide. CNN took second at 1.9 billion page views on desktops and 76 million uniques, and Huffington Post Media Group slid into third with one billon and 56 million uniques.

ADVERTISING

Google‘s first quarter $12.2 billion revenue missed its $12.3 billion projection – and that may be a sign of the lack of connection between mobile revenue and growing user base. Bloomberg reports mobile is boosting Google’s ad volume-related number, but has had a negative result on ad pricing with the influx of smartphones and the limited number of ads that can be displayed on the device. Facebook and Microsoft also reported similar struggles in this field; FB’s stocks dropped more than half after going public in 2012 due to concerns its mobile ads weren’t bringing in enough profit. Microsoft rearranged its executive board in the face of difficulties selling its mobile products. IgnitionOne data showed cost-per-click for search ads on smartphone dropped 35 percent in the U.S., and Tablets saw ad prices increase 29 percent.

MOBILE ADVERTISING

Measurement milestone? Nielsen announced the launch of the final technical trial of the expansion of Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings to mobile, with video ad platforms BrightRoll and TubeMogul participating. "2014 is a big year for Nielsen and the broader advertising industry," said Megan Clarken, EVP, Global Product Leadership. "With true cross-platform measurement across content and advertising, publishers will be one step closer to unlocking the true value of their inventory and advertisers will know the real extent of their campaign reach." The 2014-2015 TV season will mark the first time that mobile video viewing is folded into C3, the rating used by the industry to buy and sell TV advertising.

Twitter is once again taking a note from Facebook and launching its mobile app promotion suite it bought last year for $350 million, called MoPub. Facebook is expected to debut its own version of the product, which will promote apps within user’s feeds with the ability to directly download as well. CNET reports MoPub serves 130 billion ads to more than one billion devices each month, and is testing the product with Spotify and Deezer music apps.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

USA Today Sports Weekly and app publisher MAZ created the first digital version across apps on mobile and tablet devices. The app features pro sports coverage, and social feed Stream for readers to participate in specific interest teams and sports. The app is available on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Kindle for USA TODAY Sports Weekly subscribers.

Major League Gaming hired Ryan "Fwiz" Wyatt as the new Vice President of Programming. He most recently was Head of Live and eSports for Machinima.
