Netflix recorded more than 59.6 million subscribers during its Q1 earnings report yesterday, ahead of the 57 million originally projected. When including non-paying subscribers, Netflix surpassed 60 million subs, and 62.3 million globally. As for Q1 profit, the streaming service reported $23.7 million, or 38 cents a share, compared with $53.1 million, or 86 cents a share just a year prior. However, revenue increased 24 percent to $1.57 billion.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

SMOSH: The Movie, a Defy Media and AwesomenessTV co-production, will have its world premiere on July 23 in Anaheim, CA in conjunction with the Vidcon digital conference. The film stars comedy duo Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, best known to their 30 million YouTube subscribers as SMOSH. In addition, the cast includes YT celebs Jenna Marbles, Grace Helbig, Harley Morenstein, Mark Fischback (Markplier) and Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval as well as Jillian Nelson, Brittan Ross, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Michael Ian Black. It was written by Eric Falconer (How I Met Your Mother) and directed by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure).

David Letterman will say goodbye to his late night hosting gig in a new web series called Legends on Letterman. The series will feature musical performances from his 21 years on air, with Mumford & Sons kicking off the first webisode on May 5 at 8p ET. Series will premiere live on CBS.com, CBS apps and select CBS Radio and CBS Audience Network sites.

Maker Studios programming will launch on France’s Canal+ Group’s streaming service subscribers through a new agreement with Disney France. Announced at MIPCOM in Cannes yesterday, both CANALPLAY and Disney France will debut Maker On Demand this summer with 2,000 videos across content verticals such as gaming, comedy, sports, fashion, beauty, family, and featuring talent from a network of 55,000 creators. The On Demand platform will be updated every month with 200 new pieces of content; and available free to CANALPLAY subs.

TV’s favorite jailbirds will return for a fourth season. Netflix renewed Orange is the New Black for another season, just months before its third season debut on June 12. The fourth season is expected to hit the streaming service in 2016. Earlier this month, Netflix ordered a fourth season of House of Cards and a second season of Bloodline.

Verizon FiOS is getting its “om” on with Gaiam TV. The two companies unveiled a new partnership with the subscription-based VideoOn Demand service called Gaiam TV Fit & Yoga. Verizon FiOS customers will have access to fitness programs from yogis such as Rodney Yee, Leslie Sansone and Shiva Rea for $7.99 per month. “To be able to guide people in their practice, even if they can’t be in the studio with me, gives me great joy,” Yee said.

Syfy reported its best first quarter stats for online destination syfy.com. Overall, the site averaged 3.2MM uniques, 4.6MM visits, 17.5MM page views and 2.0MM video streams per month in Q1 2015; users spent 8.0 minutes per visit on the site. With the redesign of Syfy.com this January, Q1 2015 unique visitors improved +10% and +7%, compared to Q4 2014. Full episode streaming across the site and app grew by +7% vs. Q4 2014.  Time spent on the site also came up +12% vs. the 2014 average. For social media, Syfy.com ranked among the top 20 ad-supported cable entertainment networks in tweets and in the top ten in tweets per unique, with more than TLC, Spike, Discovery, History, HGTV, and Food Network.

RESEARCH

Social may be the key to increase live TV viewership, according to a new survey from Nielsen. About 49 percent of the survey’s global participants said they watch live video programming more if it had a social-media aspect; and 47 percent said they engage with social media while watching any video programming. Globally, 65 percent of those in the Asia-Pacific region and 57 percent within the African/Middle Eastern region watch live programming if it includes social-media content; compared to only 33 percent of North American of TV viewers and 26 percent of European viewers watch live TV if it has a social component. However, more than half of global respondents, 58 percent, said they browse the internet while watching video programming; North American viewers ranked the highest in this category, at 62 percent. The research studied participants with online access from 60 countries.
