Can parents’ time spent viewing in-app ads pay for in-app purchases for their kids? It can with select Cupcake Digital titles, thanks to a cool new business model that lets adults earn points by interacting with advertising content that’s kept locked away from young viewers. The Offer Wall within Cupcake’s iStoryTime library is parent-gated; kids have no access to commerce, social sharing or advertising. But should they desire, parents can select from hundreds of ads from companies like Geico and Netflix that’s provided by mobile ad platform Tapjoy via a revenue-sharing deal that puts money-per-interaction in Cupcake’s pocket.
Cupcake introduced the model two months ago when it launched iStorytime subscriptions for ebooks. "The parent is deciding whether they want to view ads, and picking the advertisers he or she wants to interact with," Cupcake’s Graham Farrar tells CynKids. Rewards are "based on level of effort. Watching a movie trailer might give you 30 points, where signing up for a credit card might give you 1,200." Thus far, response to the Offer Wall has been strong. "We’ve had double-digit percentage of our daily revenue is coming via people engaging with the Tapjoy offers," Farrar says.
The force is strong with Hub Network. Mark Hamill guests as Uncle Woodrow Burns, and Peter Cullen guests as Optimus Prime in the Saturday, April 26, Transformers Rescue Bots episode "What Lies Below." In the ep, which airs 1:30p (ET)/10:30a (PT), Optimus Prime joins the rescue bots on a mission under the earth to save Cody and his uncle.
Gravity Falls officially joins the Disney XD schedule on Monday, April 21. So of course, this is cause for a Gravity Falls Premiere Week, featuring four new-to-XD episodes rolling out Monday through Thursday at 8p, plus new, never-before-seen Gravity Falls shorts that will premiere following each episode that week.
Another study, another reason for parents to be proactive in monitoring our kids TV time. Out this week in the journal Pediatrics, new research from Massachusetts General Hospital for Children and Harvard School of Public Health finds the more time kids spend in front of the small screen, the less they tend to sleep. Not surprising, for any age. What’s new here is the study adds to growing research suggesting too much screen time in childhood is at least linked to, at most the cause of, poorer physical and mental health. The researchers followed 1,800 kids for almost 8 years from infancy. For every extra hour of TV viewed, the kids slept 7 minutes less per night on average. The effect was stronger for boys than for girls.

This year’s 136th annual event will be held April 21, and the talent lineup includes Ariana Grande, Candice Glover, R5 featuring Ross Lynch, and Sesame Street’s Mando, Rosita, Abby Cadabby, and Cookie Monster. Debby Ryan is among Storytime Stage readers, as are Sesame Street’s Mando, Rosita, Abby Cadabby, and Cookie Monster. Ryan and Jessie cast will also be demo’ing healthy food prep. Oh boy! Dreamworks Animation released the first official look at Tip (Rihanna) and alien guy Oh (Jim Parsons) from its upcoming 30th animated feature film, Home. Though the studio a few weeks ago teased out short Almost Home, this is the first detailed look at the animated protagonists. We can’t wait to hear what they sound like. The movie premieres Nov. 26, 2014.

Paul Lee yesterday reaffirmed his commitment to ABC, signing a multiyear deal to remain president of ABC Entertainment Group and continue to lead the net’s entertainment operations, ABC studios, and entertainment programming for ABC daytime and Disney syndication.
Nigel Pickard is stepping down from his role as CEO of Zodiak UK Kids and Chair of The Foundation, but will act as a consultant and adviser on a range of projects for the company. Pickard will also continue as an Executive Producer on key titles for The Foundation including The Floogals, a co-production with Sprout. The Foundation will continue to operate under Managing Director Gwen Hughes, who was appointed to the role last year.
