NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

NBCUniversal is expected to bring a slate of new series to its digital partners, in order to capitalize on advertisers’ increasing appetite for the format in addition to traditional TV. Titles include: Tesla and Wain, Last Single Girl, Saturday Night Line and Heroes Reborn: Digital Series, and will be made available on digital channel Hulu, partner channels and VOD in 2015. NBC took a stab at digital series before the 2008-2009 TV season, with Gemini Division and Woke Up Dead.

AOL‘s new homepage is pushing video front and center by featuring exclusive videos from publishers like Conde Nast Entertainment, ESPN and the Wall Street Journal. AOL.com will also highlight videos from partners like Huffington Post, MAKERS and Stylist along with the other publishers: E!, Glamour, Home Shopping Network, Self, Simon & Schuster, Vanity Fair, Vogue and WWE. AOL is also launching "AOL experts" or influencers in lifestyle categories to provide more content for the site. Vine star Zach King are on the list.

StumbleUpon video discovery app 5by is teaming up with VICE Media, Tribeca Enterprises and DEFY Media. 5by users can now watch curated video playlists through these partner channels, which will appear on the user’s homepage, customized according to time of day and individual tastes. The app is also now available on Google‘s Chromecast.

Yahoo may be eyeing a comedy from former HBO Girls and MTV Awkward writer Lesley Arfin. Variety reports the show is a spoof of MTV‘s 16 and Pregnant, called 34 and Pregnant, and was originally being produced as a digital-only series for HBO Go. It is not been confirmed whether or not the show is part of the slate Yahoo will unveil at its April 28 NewFront event. Yahoo re-signed a deal with Vevo yesterday to offer its music videos on the Yahoo Screen site and app.

RocketJump Studios, known for productions such as Video Game High School, has struck a deal with Lionsgate. Via their pact, Lionsgate will have access to RocketJump’s projects, which appear on a YouTube channel having some seven million subscribers, and disseminate the studio’s productions across TV, film, and online video.

CONTENT MEDIA

MTV debuted its newest scripted comedy series, Faking It, exclusively on the MTV App ahead of its premiere on April 22. Faking It marks the first time MTV released a scripted series ep on an app first; it will be available for 48 hours on Android and iOS devices as well as for Xbox 360 for Xbox Live Gold members.

Criterion Collection film, Italy’s The Great Beauty, is now available to stream exclusively on Hulu Plus. Eight hundred more are expected to hit the service in the coming months, Criterion’s CEO Peter Becker said in a blog yesterday. More than 150 films from Criterion are currently live on Hulu.

The third season of Crackle original Chosen premiered for free across platforms yesterday. The six new episodes return with stars Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill) and Rose McGowan (Charmed).

AD PLATFORMS

Tremor Video launched an all-screen programmatic platform for online video ads called VideoHub. "It’s hard for marketers to know how to best allocate their budgets across devices, and once they finalize a plan, the process of implementing cross screen campaigns is fraught with inefficiency," Tremor Global President, Sales and Marketing Lauren Wiener said. "This new solution guarantees marketers the seamless real-time optimization of their campaign’s impressions and reach across all devices." Six Flags, Media Storm’s Entertainment clients Fox Broadcasting, Open Road Films and SundanceTV are among the first to use the platform.

Pay TV provider MultiChoice has signed on with Clearleap to power its multiscreen video strategy. MultiChoice will use Clearleap to manage a library of live and on-demand video content while distributing and monetizing it across over-the-top (OTT) and multiscreen platforms.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Twitter acquired social data company and longtime partner Gnip yesterday, according to The Wall Street Journal. Gnip pulled in $70.3 million in revenue last year from licensing its social data – and since signing on with Twitter four years ago, Gnip has delivered more than 2.3 trillion tweets to customers. CEO Christ Moody said the acquisition "signals clear recognition that investments in social data are healthier than ever" in a blog post. The amount Twitter dished out for the company was not disclosed.

BBC.com has hit 96 million unique users, setting social media records as the most shared news brand on Twitter. The site also saw 1.3 billion page views in March, gained its five millionth Facebook fan, and shared 50 percent more than other publisher on Twitter, according to Newswhip. The site also recorded more than 34 million video views during the month, with 11 million through the BBC.com apps and mobile users, rising to 24 million users per month year on year.

EXEC MOVES

AOL hired Dave McDowell as Head of Communications Products. Prior to AOL, McDowell was with Yahoo Mail, Messenger and Groups.

Daniel Graf is the new Vice President of Consumer Product at Twitter. He was formerly on the Google Maps team.

Mobile video advertiser Vdopia named Jason Shulman as Senior Vice President, Sales. Previously, Shulman was with Spotzot as Head of Sales.
