PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

E! greenlit season 2 of scripted drama The Arrangement. Series debuted March 5, and is averaging 1.3 million total viewers and 725,000 A18-49 in Live+3 Nielsens.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Monsters of the culinary variety are back in a new season of Food Network’s Ginormous Food, home of the 5-pound burger and nine-foot po’boy, launching Friday, April 28 at 8p.

Closed cases heat up in ID’s Reasonable Doubt. In the new series, a retired homicide detective and a defense attorney investigate to determine if justice was served. First of 10 episodes launches Wednesday, April 26 at 10p.

When it premiered in 1977, Franco Zeffirelli miniseries Jesus of Nazareth was a global event that reached over 90 million people, John Cavanagh, executive producer for Smithsonian Channel‘s The Real Jesus of Nazareth, reminds Cynopsis. “Robert Powell’s portrayal of Jesus became iconic, a testament to the power of his performance and of a story that has captivated humanity for over two thousand years,” says Cavanagh. Now, on the series’s 40th anniversary, Powell journeys back to the Holy Land to seek out clues to the real historical figure who inspired Christianity. “The Real Jesus of Nazareth draws parallels between the scripted description of the biblical story – which featured seven Academy Award winners – and the real history behind it to break down the life of Jesus and the world he lived in,” says Cavanagh of the 4-parter launching Easter Sunday, April 16 at 8p.

COMING UP

Fuse, FM and Fuse.tv mark National Weed Day with Fuse 420 Drive-in: Reefer Madness, mocking the 1936 propaganda film on Thursday, April 20 at (of course) 4:20p.

Brad Goreski makes a cameo on the season 6 finale of CBS’s 2 Broke Girls, airing Monday, April 17 at 9:30p. The Fashion Police host helps Caroline and Max find gowns for a red carpet premiere. Goreski will also be on hand for the Fashion Police Met Gala special on Tuesday, May 2 at 8p.

2017 Puerto Rico Basketball League games will air in the U.S. on WAPA America throughout the regular season. WAPA will exclusively air one game Sundays at 7p.

UPFRONTS UPDATE

Pop announced a 2017-2018 programming slate that includes 7 new and returning series, and 9 projects in development. Season over season, the net added 58 new national advertisers, expanded its distribution on traditional cable and OTT platforms and saw growth in viewership among A18-49 (+21%) and W25-54 (+13%), according to Nielsen Live+7 data. “Knowing our target audience, the ‘modern grownup,’ is key to everything we do,” net president Brad Schwartz tells Cynopsis. “We’re targeting people in their 30s and 40s, and TV content from the 90s is how they stay connected to those years. All our content needs to feel oddly familiar to this audience. And that feels unique in the marketplace.”

That’s certainly the case with acquired medical drama ER, found only on Pop, as well as the acquisition of cable syndication rights to The Goldbergs, a period sitcom that airs on ABC. New series include comedy Hot Date, created in partnership with CollegeHumor; drama Clique, focused on an elite group of college girls, and Swedish Dicks, Private Investigators, a comedy following an aging ex-stuntman and optimistic DJ.

Returnees include Pop hit Schitt’s Creek for season 4, workplace comedy Nightcap for season 2, live late-night feed Big Brother After Dark, and serial killer drama Wolf Creek for season 2. Among the shows in development are 1980s-era comedy Let’s Get Physical, soapy drama Kiss & Cry and unscripted talk/travel show Get In My Van.

“The success of Schitt’s Creek pointed us in the direction of premium content,” says Schwartz. “We’ve turned away from cheap reality shows with people that don’t deserve to be on TV.” Branded content is also a big part of the picture. “Everyone’s trying to figure out how to advertise on television that’s targeted and not skippable,” says Schwartz. “We’ve been making spots that feature the talent in our shows. If you’re DVRingyou’re going to stop, because it’s the cast of Schitt’s Creek doing a Zillow ad.”

VH1’s upcoming programming includes five new and 11 returning series. “VH1 is leading the industry in growth and our new expansive slate will continue to fuel this trajectory,” said Chris McCarthy, president of VH1, MTV and Logo. “From Martha & Snoop to Hip Hop Squares, VH1 is where pop culture comes to party.”

New shows include ‘90’s House, co-hosted by Lance Bass, a project focused on pop star Ricky Martin as he prepares for his Las Vegas residency, satirical scripted series Daytime Divas, Baller Wives (wt), and Scared Famous, an “over the top murder mystery in the reality space.”

Logo transplant RuPaul’s Drag Race was renewed for season 10. Also coming back are Basketball Wives, T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle, Black Ink Crew: Chicago, Love & Hip Hop Hollywood, Shaunie’s Home Court, America’s Next Top Model, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner PartyandHip Hop Squares.

ADVERTISING

Simulmedia inked a deal to use consumer behavior from the Oracle Data Cloud that will enable advertisers to deliver national ad campaigns targeting households based on transaction data. Oracle Data Cloud claims $3 trillion in that consumer data.

SundanceTV is expanding its live event presence by joining Rooftop Films as presenting and broadcast sponsor of the Rooftop Summer Series for independent films. Initial sponsors include Corona Extra, Tanqueray and Visit Seattle. From May-August, over 45 outdoor shows will be presented in and around NYC.

CASTING

Queen Latifah (Star), Betsy Brandt (Life in Pieces), Grammy winner Jill Scott and Marin Ireland (Sneaky Pete) will star in Lifetime movie Flint, following the true story of women who sought justice after their drinking water was contaminated. Queen Latifah will also exec produce. Cher, citing family issues, pulled out of the project last month.

Ryan Gaul (Bajillion Dollar Propertie$) has joined the cast of TBS’s untitled straight-to-series comedy starring Tracy Morgan as a newly-released prisoner shocked by how much the world has changed in the past 15 years.

Rick Gonzalez and Juliana Harkavy have been promoted to series regulars for season 6 of CW’s Arrow.

Josh Stewart (Insidious) landed a series regular role in season 2 of USA’s Shooter, starring Ryan Phillippe. Meanwhile, Phillippe lightens up with a guest spot on Fox comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, airing in May.

VIDEOS IN SHORT

Discovery Communications has partnered with adventurer Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild) and Samsung for a series of short form videos in which Grylls showcases the Samsung Gear S3 in survival scenarios (weather predictions, calorie consumption, altitude while scaling a mountain). Videos are filmed using 360 technology.

A series of animated shorts will celebrate the stories of heroes from a galaxy far, far away. Micro-series Star Wars Forces of Destiny, from Disney and Lucasfilm, will focus on the likes of Rey, Princess Leia, Jyn Erso and, available on Disney YouTube in July. A 2-part TV special featuring 8 additional shots arrives on Disney Channel in fall 2017.

DIGITAL DEVELOPMENTS

Hulu landed exclusive streaming VOD rights to past episodes of OWN’s Queen Sugar. The complete first season will be available beginning April 21. Season 2 of the drama debuts on OWN with a 2-night premiere event on Tuesday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 21 at 10p.

Amazon
is developing an animated children’s series and a live-action kids show with hip hop band The Roots and their Passyunk Productions. Both will be exec produced by The Roots’ Tarik Trotter and Ahmir Thompson, Shawn Gee for Philly Films and Brian Sher for Category 5 Entertainment.

NBC and the NBC Television Affiliates Board struck a deal, months in the making, that has the affiliates joining NBCUniversal’s carriage agreements with new OTT streaming services, and TVE distribution rights for pay TV subscribers. “We are excited to take the important step of planting local Affiliates linear feeds in a position to join the Over the Top space, along with our network partners,” said Ralph Oakley, chairman of the NBC Affiliates. “We believe that OTT distribution can play an important role in ensuring the growth and development of local, network-affiliated television stations. We appreciate NBC’s forward-looking approach.”

Nelvana has partnered with Discovery Kids to bring animated series The ZhuZhus to Latin America and the Caribbean beginning this May. In addition, Nelvana has completed a broadcast extension deal with Discovery Kids for Backyardigans, ensuring that the CGI-animated series’ 80 episodes remain on-air in Latin America and the Caribbean.
