04/13/17: Roku gains access to TiVo’s tech patents in new licensing pact

The Ku band is primarily used for satellite communications, most notably for fixed and broadcast services, and for specific applications such as NASA‘s Tracking Data Relay Satellite.


has inked a multi-year intellectual property agreement with TiVo. Under the deal, Roku will gain access to the patent portfolios of TiVo and its parent company, Rovi. (Rovi, which acquired TiVo last year for $1.1 billion, has long been known to boast roughly a zillion tech patents.) The device-maker will also gain access to the OTT patents covered under TiVo’s licensing agreement with Intellectual Ventures. The patents covered under the deal are wide-ranging, including technologies such as mobile device media processes, interactive program guides, and DVR functions.
And there goes another one. Digital media company Studio71 has decided not to hold an in-person presentation for the Digital Content NewFronts, the series of advertiser-oriented events that select digital media companies use to compete with TV networks and the Upfronts. But unlike Yahoo, BuzzFeed, and Fullscreen Media, Studio71 hasn’t axed its presentation altogether. Instead, the company says it will hold its NewFronts event online. The “virtual” event will still feature appearances from the company’s talent partners, which include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and YouTube star Lilly Singh, AKA ||Superwoman||.
Looks like Altice USA could be girding for battle with the likes of Verizon and Comcast. The division of Dutch telecom Altice NV has registered for an initial public offering that could raise between $1 billion and $2 billion. Altice has already acquired Cablevision, Audience Partners and Teads as it bulks up in the digital space.






PlayStation Vue, Sony’s OTT-based live TV service, is getting a designated eSports channel. Called esportsTV, it’ll be the first 24-hour linear TV network in the U.S. dedicated entirely to eSports. The channel hails from ESL, a producer of competitive gaming events.


Just in time for Upfronts, NBCUniversal and Kargo are teaming to offer marketers a single point of access to reach over 170 million mobile users 80+ premium publisher properties across mobile web and apps, collaborating to create opportunities in a “trusted, brand-safe environment,” said Linda Yaccarino, NBCU’s Chairman of Advertising Sales and Client Partnerships.
Privacy-safe, cross-device marketing technology solutions provider Tapad has a new partnership with video marketing platform Innovid. The integration enables Innovid to bring cross-device personalization and a more unified viewer experience to its video marketing clients, including Bank of America, L’Oreal, Microsoft and Procter & Gamble.
The Trustworthy Accountability Group
has awarded a second group of companies its TAG Certified Against Fraud Seal, including Forensiq, LKQD, Publicis Groupe, Publishers Clearing House, Receptiv, Sociomantic Labs and Verta Media. These and other companies are deemed to have met TAG’s anti-fraud requirements.
Media agency Assembly has forged a strategic deal with Fox’s true[X], whose products give consumers options in their video ad breaks. The deal, which gives true[X] more access to Assembly’s brand roster, is an extension of the companies’ existing partnership


Twitter is expanding its third-party measurement partnerships by adding Moat and Integral Ad Science. The social platform already uses Nielsen Digital Ad Ratings and comScore validated Campaign Essentials (vCE).


New data from eMarketer show that n 2017, the average U.S. adult will spend two hours and 25 minutes per day using mobile apps, an increase of 10.3% over last year and a bit higher than previously forecast. This means that time spent with mobile apps will reach 19.9% of average daily total media time.

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming from April 5-11 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Insights from the 2,473,382 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– Tops in excited ERs: the 2017 Masters Tournament Final Round on CBS where, after being neck-and-neck for 72 holes, Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia beat out Justin Rose in a sudden death playoff to win his first major title.
– Outside of sports, the show that had viewers sending the most congratulatory messages was ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, where fans in particular talked about being proud of contestant (and member of Fifth Harmony) Normani Kordei.
– One show that left viewers noting serious awkwardness was the season finale of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta, where a dinner between Kandi, Riley and Block had people cringing.
– Excluding sports, the show that had viewers feeling the most amused was Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta on VH1, where people found Joseline in particular super funny.
