04/01/15: Michelle Phan and Endemol Shine Group launch lifestyle network ‘ICON’; CDS signs GloZell Green; Netflix and Marvel tap Cheo Hodari Coker to executive Produce ‘Luke Cage’

YouTube beauty guru Michelle Phan launched a new lifestyle network with Endemol Shine Group (part of its Endemol Beyond Premium Content Network). Called ICON, the net will host original series and more from up-and-coming digital influencers and lifestyle experts for programming in beauty, fashion, wellness, DIY, food, and travel stories. In addition to Phan, others premiering new series on ICON make up 2.4 billion YT views, and include talent such as Ann Le (AnneorShine), Cassey Ho (Blogilates), Promise Phan (Dope2111), Charis Lincoln (CharismaStarTV), Anisa Noor and beauty vlogger Rae from The Raeviewer. The first eight original series to debut are: Pretty Little Pranksters, Trash to Fab, Fascinating Women, a Q&A series with ICON influencers called The FAQs, beauty problem solver series She’s Gotta Have It, diet and beauty show Skinside Out, Everyday LUXE (out in June) and Decade Beauty (launching in September). Eventually, content will live on native Facebook video, but for now it will land first on YouTube. "Wherever our viewers are is where we will be,” said Phan, “but we do love Mother Google. I wouldn’t be here without YouTube.” Endemol Beyond will unveil additional ICON U.S. and UK original content at its NewFront on Thursday, May 7.
Multi-platform network Collective Digital Studio (CDS) signed GloZell Green, a YouTube comedian with more than 3.5 million subscribers and more than 600 million views. Known for her bright green lipstick, GloZell was recently invited to The White house to interview President Barack Obama following the State of the Union address this year. GloZell joins other YT talent on CDS including Rhett + Link, Epic Meal Time and Freddie Wong.
Netflix and Disney’s Marvel Television tapped Cheo Hodari Coker (Ray Donovan) as Executive Producer and showrunner for Luke Cage, the hero series set to premiere next year. The two companies previously announced that Mike Colter (American Horror Story: Coven) will play the title character after he makes an appearance on sister series A.K.A. Jessica Jones.
Comedian and Broad City regular Hannibal Buress will host the 19th Annual Webby Awards on May 18 in New York City. Buress’ digital following includes more than 400,000 Twitter followers and more than 120,000 on Instagram. Additionally, the comic will debut his own Comedy Central series called Why? With Hannibal Buress. A premiere date has not been announced.
All3Media – the TV, film and digital production and distribution company – acquired company Neal Street Productions. UK’s Neal Street is known for BBC ONE series Call the Midwife, Penny Dreadful, The Hollow Crown and the new musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
and Samsung are teaming up on the new reality series Meet the Smiths, premiering on April 3 at 9p ET. Available on TBS.com, Samsung will have season-long sponsorship of the Meet the Smiths show section featuring full episodes, behind-the-scenes clips and bonus content. In addition, a sixty-second vignette with custom Samsung messaging will air on TBS and TBS social outlets. Turner will premiere the first episode today on TBS.com, the Watch TBS app and participating distribution partners’ sites and apps.
For the fifth year in a row, California music festival Coachella will stream live on its YouTube channel from Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12. Sponsored by T-Mobile, viewers can choose from three channels, create personal avatars, browse the interactive map of the festival, and customize their own festival schedules.
One of the big concerns in the digital media industry today is how people discover video. "On mobile, elements of discovery that used to happen in different places (seeing a promo on TV; getting recommendations at the water cooler), happen together in feeds. We’ve seen that on Facebook, where millions of people will discover entertainment content in their News Feed within hours of that content being promoted.” So says Facebook’s Jim Underwood, Global Head of Entertainment Strategy, who’ll be the Keynote at the Cynopsis Digital Business Summit Keynoter on April 23rd at NYC’s Astor Center. Tumblr named its first Chief Marketing Officer: Stephanie Dolgins. Most recently, Dolgins ran her own digital marketing consulting agency with clients such as CNN and Refinery29. Metamarkets announced that Jim Payne, Founder and former CEO of MoPub (acquired by Twitter in 2013), was appointed to the company’s Board of Directors. Payne founded MoPub in 2010 to provide better ad monetization and control tools for mobile publishers.

Music business mogul and rapper Jay Z unveiled his new music-streaming service yesterday, which is set to compete with the likes of Spotify and Apple’s upcoming service. Called Tidal, the platform will provide higher quality audio files for subscribers at a $10 or $20 version option per month price tag; there is no ad-supported free version. During its launch, Jay Z’s partners (and friends in the industry) Kanye West, Rihanna and DeadMau5 changed their social media profile with images to express their support.
