Charter announced plans to acquire Bright House Networks, the sixth largest cable operator in the US, for $10.4 billion. Pending regulatory and shareholder approval, the deal has some conditions. Among them: the expiration of Time Warner Cable’s right of first offer for Bright House and the close of Charter’s previously announced transactions tied to the Comcast-TWC deal. “This acquisition enhances our scale, and solidifies New Charter as the second largest cable operator in the US. I look forward to working with the Bright House team, whom we have known for years, in delivering great products and services to grow our market share,” said Charter president and CEO Tom Rutledge.

Comedy Central is standing by its man. Hours after the net announced its choice to succeed The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, tweets by South African comedian Trevor Noah were uncovered that included jokes about Jews and women (“Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I’m sexy!”  fat chicks everywhere) that some found offensive. “Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included,” the network said in its statement. “To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair.” Agreed Noah on Tuesday, via Twitter, “To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian.”

Revolt Live is hosting a concert featuring performances by several artists featured on the Furious 7 soundtrack, including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson. The event, being held at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, will stream live on REVOLT.TV today at 4p. "We collaborated with Universal Pictures to create the ultimate celebration for Furious 7,” Mike Roche, SVP sales and partnerships, tells Cynopsis. Movie opens this weekend.

Gary Sinise will narrate the first season of INSP‘s Brush of Honor. The series follows host and artist Phil Taylor as he visits the hometowns of service members, then presents a portrait of the fallen hero to his or her family. “We are excited to have Gary narrating these episodes,” said Doug Butts, INSP’s SVP of Programming. “He and the Gary Sinise Foundation have supported our nation’s military and their families for years.” Series debuts Thursday, May 21 at 9p.

CBS scored the most Daytime Emmy nods, with 62, versus 50 for PBS and syndicated, 35 for ABC and 20 for NBC. Alison Sweeney, known to prime time viewers as host of NBC‘s The Biggest Loser, received her first-ever Daytime Emmy nomination, for her role on Days of our Lives. “22 years on Days was such an incredible journey and to be honored by my peers with a nomination for my work is priceless,” Sweeney, who left the series in October, tells Cynopsis. Event airs Sunday, April 26 at 8p, live on Pop; for the full list of nominees, go here.

AccuWeather, Inc. launched AccuWeather Network, focused on local weather with features of national and regional interest. Topics include safety, lifestyle, health, travel and business.

Discovery Channel, led by new president Rich Ross, “is going from strength to strength this year,” said Ross. “We’re adding new documentaries, scripted series and themed programming to a strong lineup of new unscripted series.” Of note: Documentary film Racing Extinction, with Louie Psihoyos and the team behind The Cove working undercover to expose the black market in endangered species; “Elevation Weekend,” featuring daring climbing efforts, and scripted series Harley-Davidson, based on the true story of the men who started the motorcycle company.

TLC is planning over 500 hours of original programming, including 50-plus new and returning series in the categories of “Family” (Hardly Royal, about a blue-collar car repair advisor who discovers he’s heir to an island in the UK), “Aisle and Style” (Dare to Wear, with a style expert helping fashion disasters shape up) and “Life’s Milestone Moments” (social experiment Married by Mom and Dad, with parents picking the perfect match).

New Girls On the Block centers on a group of female friends in the transgender community, while Sex In Public follows sex expert Jill Dictrow as she goes undercover to get unsuspecting pedestrians to dish about their private lives in public settings.

Discovery Family, transitioned from The Hub last year, has 200 hours of new programming and 20 new series in the pipeline. The net “is off to a fast and furious start – and we’re confident that the best is yet to come,” said GM Tom Cosgrove. Velocity, 2014’s number one network in primetime cable for M25-54, boasts a programming slate of 12 returning franchises and over 220 premiere hours. “Audiences came to the network because we have an unmatched formula of real, expert characters combined with entertaining, fascinating stories that bring autos to life,” said Robert Scanlon, GM. “Velocity’s Upfront slate aims to continue building this community of viewers.” Example: Dave Kindig, breakout star of 2014, returns with a new season of Bitchin’ Rides.

American Heroes Channel arrives at Upfront season with a slate of new series and specials, as well as the return hits like Gunslingers and Against the Odds, which have earned the number 1 and number 2 spots, respectively, as AHC’s best original series ever in Prime delivery among P2+, P25-54 and M25-54. “At the core of AHC is programming that has conflict, action and adrenaline, but also delivers intimate, first-person perspectives from the players on the frontlines of history,” said Kevin Bennett, EVP and GM.

“Like any good road trip, the most fun is in the detours and there’s no exception on Destination America, where we’re broadening original programming hours to transport viewers off the beaten path with stories from all across these United States of Awesome,” said Marc Etkind, GM. Debuts include Epic America, and 9/11: The Lost Hero (wt).

RLTV launched a new season of A Taste of History last week, and host Chef Walter Staib, for one, is "very excited" about what’s being served. "We covered a wide range of 18th century history," Staib tells Cynopsis, "worked with spectacular ingredients, and demystified some important historical personalities, such as Benjamin Franklin, General Hand, the Marquis de Lafayette and Robert Morris.” Cookingshow airs Wednesday at 8p.

TBS and Samsung are teaming for reality series Meet the Smiths, starring NBA legend and TNT’s Inside the NBA analyst Kenny Smith and his family. FX spy drama The Americans made it to season four. “The series has cemented its status with critics as television’s best current drama and arguably the best show on TV,” said presidents of original programming Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, “and we couldn’t agree more.” Season three closes Wednesday, April 22.

Showtime’s House of Lies will be back for season five in 2016. Season four finale aired Sunday.

Also back for season five: Fox’s New Girl. “Four seasons in, New Girl continues to be one of the smartest and most relatable comedies on television,” said Fox Entertainment president David Madden.

Lifetime’s Devious Maids is back for a third season on a new night, Mondays at 9p, beginning June 1.

Jeff Fahey (Lost, Justified) is joining the second season of El Rey Network‘s From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series in a recurring role. He’ll play Uncle Eddie Cruickshank, the man who raised The Gecko Brothers after their father died.

Independent TV producer/format agency Media Ranch acquired the rights to adapt The Apprentice in Quebec from United Artists Media Group. “We’re convinced the series will be a huge success – there is a thirst for that type of content here because it resonates with the core entrepreneurial values of Quebec,” said President of Media Ranch, Sophie Ferron.
