03.28.17

Good morning. It’s Tuesday March 28, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The silver and black are officially bound for the Silver State as NFL owners voted 31-1 to approve the Raiders move from Oakland to Las Vegas. The team will continue to play at the Oakland Coliseum in 2017 and 2018, at a minimum, while a new venue is built off the Strip, with the decision marking the third NFL team in 14 months to relocate.

Following the decision, league commissioner Roger Goodell, Raiders owner Mark Davis and other key figures address the move in a press conference. “My father used to say that the greatness of the Raiders is in its future, and the opportunity to build a world-class stadium in the entertainment capital of the world is one opportunity that will give us the ability to achieve that greatness,” said Davis. “I have mixed feelings, obviously. I love Oakland, I love the fans in Oakland, and I know that there’s going to be disappointment and maybe some anger. I just hope that in the future, as we play in Oakland this year, that they understand that it wasn’t the players, it wasn’t the coaches that made this decision, but it was me that made it, and if they have anybody to talk to about it, it should be me.”

ON THE AIR

CBS Sports and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2017 NCAA Tournament continued to surge through the second weekend of the contest, with the latest Nielsen numbers showing that the tournament is now averaging 9.8 million viewers through Sunday’s Regional Finals, for a markup of 10% over 2016. That is also good enough to rank as the third most-watched tournament in 24 years with games  up 10% from last year (8.9 million), making it the third most-watched tournament in 24 years.  In addition, the NCAA Tournament is averaging a 6.0/13 rating/share, up 9% from 2016. The Regional Finals on TBS (Saturday) and CBS (Sunday) averaged 10.2 million viewers and a 6.0/13 rating/share, both up 11% respectively from last year. In addition, NCAA March Madness Live has generated an all-time record 88 million live video streams during this year’s tournament, an increase of 31% over last year.

Golf Channel locked in over 40 hours of coverage for golf’s first major championship of 2017, the LPGA’s ANA Inspiration, with the network carrying 20 hours of live tournament coverage from Thursday-Sunday, as well as a one-hour, pro-am special on Wednesday. Mike Tirico and Judy Rankin will reunite to call the action and will be joined by tower analyst Tom Abbott and course reporters Kay Cockerill, Jerry Foltz and Karen Stupples.

WWE will see Pitbull take the stage at WrestleMania 33 on April 2, joined by Flo Rida, Stephen Marley and LunchMoney Lewis. In a medley performance, Pitbull will perform his newest hit single “Options” with Stephen Marley, before being joined by Flo Rida and LunchMoney Lewis to finish the act with his popular single and WrestleMania 33’s theme song, “GreenLight.”

Speaking of WrestleMania, CBS Sports Radio announced that a special edition of The Tax Show: Bodyslams & Beyond will air immediately after the event from 11p-2a to breakdown the results of the show. He will be joined by guests Mike Johnson of PW Insider and WFAN’s Evan Roberts.

Elsewhere in radio, ESPN Radio and espnW launch a three-hour The Trifecta: Women Making History Special, today from 9p-midnight on ESPN Radio and simulcast on ESPN3.  The special, which honors Women’s History Month, will be hosted by The Trifecta’s Kate Fagan, Jane McManus and Sarah Spain where they will discuss the impact female athletes have had on the sports landscape. The will be joined by special guests that include Sue Bird, Stefanie Dolson, Julie Foudy, Jemele Hill, Jessica Mendoza and April Ross.

On the local front, FOX Sports South and FOX Sports Southeast announced the broadcast team for Atlanta United’s inaugural 2017 season, naming play-by-play announcers Alan Green and Kevin Egan, color analyst Dan Gargan and studio host and sideline reporter Brittany Arnold for the role.

Meanwhile, CSN California is revamping its lineup for A’s coverage, tapping Jose Canseco, Dave Stewart and Dallas Braden as on-air analysts for A’s Pregame and Postgame Live. Bip Roberts and Shooty Babitt also will return as part of the rotation to join host Brodie Brazil.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

Major League Baseball unveiled a new multi-platform advertising campaign designed to “showcase the excitement and perpetual drama that the game of baseball fosters during an emotional season,” dubbed This Season on Baseball. The promotion’s opening spots showcase the game’s top players and the major storylines and – as the season unfolds – new promos will be created to reflect the milestones, match-ups and drama that’s happening in the game. Spots saw the likes of Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Giancarlo Stanton, Mookie Betts, Edwin Encarnacion, and a slew of other stars take part in dedicated shoots during Spring Training in both Florida and Arizona. "The excitement that the young talent emerging across Major League Baseball brings to the game is really being felt right now,” said Tony Petitti, Chief Operating Officer, Major League Baseball. “MLB is must-see entertainment with new heroes, stars and stories developing every day and this new creative campaign captures the energy by getting fans excited to watch it all unfold while showcasing our top players and rising stars.”

The World Long Drive Association expanded its partnership with Volvik to become the official title sponsor of the World Long Drive Championship, which takes place Aug. 31-Sept. 6. Meanwhile, Avis was named the official rental car of the Volvik World Long Drive Championship. “We had a huge reaction to being the official ball of the WLDA last year from those tuning in watching pink, green, yellow and orange Volvik golf balls going 430-plus yards in the Finals,” said Volvik USA President Don Shin. “With everything Golf Channel is doing to advance Long Drive and its exciting atmosphere, we wanted to get involved even more by becoming the title sponsor of the Volvik World Long Drive Championship, in addition to being the official ball of all sanctioned WLDA events."

FedEx Corp. and JA Worldwide are teaming up to launch the FedEx Junior Business Challenge, a program in conjunction with the PGA TOUR to “help empower the next generation of entrepreneurs across the country.” The program will serve as a platform to provide select JA students the opportunity to showcase their business concepts at designated PGA TOUR tournaments this season for a chance to generate a $75,000 donation from FedEx to further support youth entrepreneurship.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

MVPindex and 120 Sports unveiled a collection of data surrounding the social activity of MLB teams and players from the 2016 season and offseason. According to the list, the top five “Socially Relevant MLB Athletes” included: Robinson Cano, David Ortiz, Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw and Yu Darvish. From a team perspective, the top five include: the Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers and Blue Jays.

15 Seconds of Fame and the Big Ten Network inked a multi-year partnership that will, for the first time in college sports history, set to deliver fans their TV appearances straight to their mobile device when they attend select BTN-telecasted sporting events. The deal begins with the 2017 college football season, with content able to be shared across users’ social networks. “With some of the most passionate fans in all of sports, the Big Ten is the perfect audience for 15SOF and BTN to introduce a technology that will change the fan experience and help preserve once-in-a-lifetime memories,” said Brett Joshpe, CEO of 15SOF. “This content, which can be shared with the tap of button, is the ultimate event takeaway for fans and an incredibly valuable vehicle for brands to engage with targeted consumers in a personal way.”

ESPORTS

The Gfinity Elite Series named Rocket League as the third and final title for the upcoming event, where it will join CS:GO and Street Fighter V. The Gfinity Challenger Series will run for five weeks, with the top players drafted into the Elite Series by professional teams.

Owners of the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood are spicing up the experience with the creation of an immersive esports theater in its adjacent Chinese 6 Theatre complex. Variety writes that the announcement was made at CinemaCon, with plants for the facility to function “both as an MX4D Motion EFX movie theatre, as well as serve as what’s touted as the first immersive spectator theater hosting competitive esports tournaments along with providing a launch pad for a network of tournament theaters beyond Hollywood.” “What we are launching is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Robert K. Laity, CEO of the TCL Chinese Theatre. “We see cinema operators working together as a global network of immersive MX4D esports theaters and becoming part of the fabric of competitive gaming. We are in discussions with sponsors, esports organizations and other cinema operators to join forces with the TCL Chinese Theatre as we bring this exciting capability to the world of online and live tournament play.”
