NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Netflix added Chris Tucker to its comedy line-up in a deal that snags exclusive rights to his first full-length stand-up special. Chris Tucker Live will be available in all Netflix streaming territories as of July 10; Tucker joins Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Bill Burr and Chelsea Peretti, all of whom have Netflix deals.
 
Hulu ordered a ten-episode straight-to-series show from Parenthood and About a Boy producer Jason Katims. The hour-long drama, called The Way, will follow a family within a controversial faith movement as they struggle with relationships and power. Parenthood writer and producer Jessica Goldberg will write and executive produce alongside Katims and True Jack Production’s Michelle Lee.
 
The pilot episode of AOL’s first long-form series, Connected, debuted a week early and was made available on Roku devices today. Produced by documentary mogul Morgan Spurlock, the series’ first four episodes will premiere for the general public on March 31 on AOL On platforms. Four episodes will roll out every two weeks until May 25, for a total of 20.
 
…in more AOL news: its media property TechCrunch launched its first daily news show, Crunch Report. The web series will air daily from 4-5p PT, consisting of news on the latest startups, internet products, financial coverage and Silicon Valley gossip.
 
Comcast NBCUniversal will host its third hackathon from March 28-29 in Orlando presented by Universal Theme Parks & Resorts, Telemundo and Golf Channel. Contestants will compete to win $10,000 at the 36-hour event, via access to platforms, electronic components, APIs, SDKs and content from technology firms in fields such as Virtual Reality, Automatic Content Recognition and Wearables. “We are looking to combine physical and virtual environments to create the ultimate in immersive entertainment – whether you’re in one of our theme parks, on a Telemundo sound stage, or at a golf course with the GolfNow app,” NBCUniversal Media Labs Senior Vice President and CTO Sanjay Macwan told Cynopsis. “It’s the first time we’re challenging developers to leverage both hardware and software.” Sponsors include Forge by Acision and Intel along with tech partners such as Twitter, Microsoft and Jawbone.

EXEC MOVES

Simulmedia hired Ethan Rapp as Senior Vice President, Program Management. Prior to joining Simulmedia, Rapp was with mobile tech firm At Peak Resources, which he co-founded and for which he served as Chief Insights Officer.

MDC-owned media services agency Assembly appointed Alan Smith as Chief Digital Officer. He was most recently Head of Media Investment and Programmatic for North America at digital media agency Essence.

MPRM Communications hired two new Account Supervisors and announced four promotions. Courtney Dolliver joined the Home Entertainment practice while Melissa Mills joined the Digital Media and Technology team. Leif Helland was promoted to Executive Director; Caitlin McGee and Guido Gotz were both promoted to Director and Shelby Kimlick is now an Account Supervisor. Dolliver joins the agency from Bender/Helper Impact, where she worked with Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Cinedigm and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Mills was most recently at PBS, where she led publicity efforts for PBS Digital Studios and PBS KIDS.
