Amazon renewed another season of its original cop drama Bosch. The show stars Titus Welliver (Sons of Anarchy) as Detective Harry Bosch; according to Amazon, Bosch has been the most-watched title on Prime Instant Video out of all TV shows and movies in the four weeks since the first season debut on Feb. 13. Returning cast for the second season includes Jamie Hector (The Wire), Amy Aquino (Being Human), Lance Reddick (The Wire) and Sarah Clarke (24).

John Hendricks, founder of the Discovery Channel and former Chairman of Discovery Communications, launched his new SVOD venture CuriosityStream. Starting yesterday at 6p ET, those in the U.S. can watch fact-based programs for $2.99 a month. New movies will be added weekly. “My dream of a content-on-demand service that uses advanced media to empower the enduring human desire to understand the universe and the world around us is now a reality,” Hendricks said.
 
Netflix
has acquired international distribution rights for the Duplass Brothers’ new comedy Manson Family Vacation. Jay Duplass and Linas Phillips star in the film, which revolves around siblings who take a road trip to the site of the Manson Family murders. Netflix first acquired 6 Years from director Hannah Fidell (A Teacher) at SXSW earlier this week.

AppNexus acquired Yieldex, an analytics platform for publishers, for $100 million. Yieldex’s clients include The New York Times, Expedia, Pandora, CBS Interactive, Univision and The Weather Channel, and allows publishers to forecast, price and sell their inventory.
 
YouTube
and Portal A released the second part to the Behind the Scenes documentary series profiling the Clean & Clear “See the Real Me” campaign that launched on YT last year. Portal A also produced the other two Behind the Scenes’ features about brands Johnson & Johnson and adidas. “Increasingly, we’re hearing from brands that they want to become better content creators on YouTube, but they’re not exactly sure how to do it,” Head of YouTube Ads Marketing David Mogensen told the Wall Street Journal. “We thought instead of telling them how to be better content creators, we can show them by highlighting a brand that’s going through the same journey.”
 
Advertising tech company Canoe announced that its VOD ad insertion (DAI) is available in more than 130 DMAs, including 48 of the top 50. Canoe VOD DAI is currently across multiple cable operators in more than 35 million digital cable households from Bright House, Comcast, Cox, and Time Warner. Canoe provides ads on behalf of more than 50 TV networks including A+E, ABC, AMC, CBS, CW, Fox, HGTV, MTV, NBC, and TNT. Last year, Canoe had more than six billion viewed ad impressions.

VC FUNDING + INVESTMENTS
 

Entertainment company PlayBuzz raised $16 million in Series B financing. The round was led by venture capital fund 83North, with additional investment from Saban Capital and participation of existing investors Carmel Ventures and FirstTime Ventures. PlayBuzz boasts more than 80 million unique monthly visitors, and has been ranked as the top most shared publisher on Facebook for the past four months.

 
 
RESEARCH
 

Facebook is expected to hit $3.8 billion in video ad sales by 2017. Wall Street research firm Nomura estimated that the social network’s video ads carry a CPM between $22-$28, similar to premium digital-video inventory and primetime broadcast TV. The firm still projects that YouTube will reign king in 2017, and double revenue from $4.1 billion to $8.5 billion. YT ‘s CPMs average $15-$20. “In contrast to YouTube, because users are logged into Facebook’s service while viewing their newsfeed, Facebook can leverage all of a user’s data to offer advertisers unmatched targeting at scale,” Nomura analyst Anthony DiClemente said.

Simulmedia promoted J. Peter Ban to Chief Operating Officer. Ban has been the company’s Senior Vice President of Business Operations since September of 2014.
 
Global Eagle Entertainment appointed Jim Griffiths as Senior Vice-President of Content Purchasing and Distribution. Most recently, Griffiths was Chief Executive Officer at GSD LLC, a consulting firm specialized in supporting international media companies with their business and growth strategies.
 
Entertainment marketing agency Buddha Jones named Scott Carson as Head of Video Game Marketing. Prior to joining Buddha Jones, Carson was Vice President, Creative Director within the video game marketing division at Ant Farm, where he has worked since 2006.

Rooster Teeth released the trailer for its first feature film, Lazer Team, at SXSW yesterday. Via Indiegogo, the studio raised a total of $2.48 million in funding for Lazer Team, which is directed by Rooster Teeth co-founder Matt Hullum and follows four people who happen upon a suit meant to fight the evil alien forces about to attack Earth.
