Amazon Prime increased its prices by 25 percent yesterday, from $79 to $99 a year. Prime members received a letter yesterday informing them that the raise was due to fuel and transportation costs: The $2.4 billion spent in 2010 on shipping expenses jumped to $3.5 billion in 2013. Prime’s new cost nets out to $8.25 per month (including the free two-day shipping) versus Netflix‘s $7.99 – not a big difference.
Dreamworks will debut three original kid’s series based on characters from movies like Shrek, Madagascar and Veggie Tales on Netflix in late 2014. The new shows are King Julien, Puss in Boots and Veggie Tales in the House; new episodes from the duo’s first content partnership, Turbo FAST, will premiere on April 4.

Aereo may get a blast from the Obama Administration during its U.S. Supreme Court hearing against broadcasters on April 22. The administration reportedly asked if it could argue against the streaming service, but the Court has not yet responded. Deputy Solicitor General Edwin Kneedler stated in a filing yesterday, “because the Court’s decision in this case will likely address important questions about the scope of the public-performance right in the context of novel technologies for transmitting and viewing copyrighted audiovisual works using the internet, the United States has a substantial interest in presenting its views on the question represented.”
HBO and Facebook are teaming up to stream the red carpet premiere of Game of Thrones season four on March 18 through Facebook Live. Fans can ask questions on the show’s Instagram and Facebook pages, and cast members will respond. Following the red carpet, which will air at 6 p.m. ET on Facebook.com/GameofThrones or FacebookLive.com, fans will get an exclusive look at a new trailer from the season.
TBS is offering full episode previews of the season openers for Deal With It and Bam’s Badass Game Show on its YouTube channel and Facebook page on April 7. The digital previews will also be available on tbs.com and the Watch TBS mobile apps up, until DWI kicks off on March 19 at 10:30 p.m., and BBGS premieres on April 14 at 10:30 p.m.
E Online launched a lifestyle site called The Fabulist (formerly The Trend) to offer companion content to its new series of the same name. The site will feature beauty, fashion and pop culture trends to extend the show’s reach, which is hosted by The Hills’ Kristin Cavallari and designer Orly Shani.

Facebook’s much anticipated auto play video ads will be called Premium Video Ads, and will start rolling into the NewsFeed in late April. The video ads are not being called “disruptive,” because they’re activated only when a user scrolls over them, and there’s no sound until a user clicks on them. The ads will include day-parting, and Facebook will employ Nielsen so advertisers can measure audiences similarly to TV, while Ace Metrix will measure ad quality and engagement. Facebook has been experimenting with these spots for the past few months, with Summit Entertainment as the first to test the product in December on the movie Divergent.
Google‘s revenue dipped for the first time from search ads on U.S. desktops, and is expected to decline another seven percent this year due to growth in the mobile ad market. The report from eMarketer says Google search revenue on desktops will hit $10 billion compared to $10.8 billion last year, while mobile search revenue will jump to $5.1 billion this year from the $3.3 billion in 2013.
Rovio owned and operated video channel ToonsTV surpassed two billion views (225 million video views per month) since launching a year ago. The average time a viewer spent on a video was 12-15 minutes; 4-6 videos were watched in a single sitting; and the audience (30 percent kids, 30 percent teens and 40 percent adults) used mobiles and tablets in a 50/50 split. ToonsTV includes original Angry Birds content and third party content from Hasbro Studios, National Geographic and more, which can all be accessed in the Angry Birds apps and channels on Samsung Smart TVs and Roku devices.
Discovery Channel rolled out the Get Naked and Afraid companion app, which lets viewers upload their own photo and place themselves in the “shoes” of the naked survivalists to navigate tasks along with them. Discovery.com is also featuring a Primitive Survival Rating Test for fans to find out if they can make it through a Naked and Afraid challenge.

Nickelodeon‘s Nick Jr. app with TV Everywhere capabilities is set to debut in the spring. The app will first be available for iPad devices, and will include educational entertainment games, short form video and curriculum content. With authentication, users can access full-length episodes and live streaming of the network. Characters like Dora the Explorer and Gil from Bubble Guppies will speak directly to a user upon opening the app.
