"If the government wants to give them permission to steal our signal, then we will come up with some other way to offer our content and get paid for it." So said CBS CEO Leslie Moonves yesterday, about what he’d do if the Aereo video streaming service is declared legal by courts. Instead of broadcast, Moonves declared CBS would go completely over-the-top and online. Previously, he had threatened that the network would morph into a cable channel if Aereo is granted transmission rights. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear the case April 22nd.
Disney may be considering buying Maker Studios at $500 million or more. Recode reports that neither party has officially confirmed the deal, but if Disney does make the bet, it will have Maker’s 5.5 billion video views a month and YouTube’s biggest star, PewDiePie.
EXCLUSIVE: Cupcake Digital will announce today that it’s acquiring zuuka, developer of the iStoryTime app library. The purchase positions Cupcake as one of the largest independent children’s app developers, with a combined library of more than 250 titles and a download base of over 8.5 million. zuuka founders Graham Farrar and Jack "Woody" Sears will hold senior management positions at Cupcake Digital.
TV exec veterans Jeff Gaspen (former NBCU chairman) and John Klein (former CNN president) are working on a subscription online video platform called TV App, or TAPP. The platform will focus on talent and TV personalities; according to the Hollywood Reporter, the two have been courting Sarah Palin and other big names. TAPP investors include Discovery Communications, Demarest Films, and Google‘s Eric Schmidt. "Unlike YouTube, we’re not trying to create stars out of total unknowns – we’re trying to take stars and give them a foothold and presence on a whole new platform," Klein told Hollywood Reporter.
The BBC unveiled its new VOD iPlayer service yesterday, which touts a fresh interface, more exclusive content and better navigation. The player is currently free to use across more than 1,000 devices, and offers users a login option to get a more personalized version of the platform. The redesign will soon include the newly switched over BBC3 channel to the web only format.

Social media web series @SummerBreak from The Chernin Group, Omnicom Group ad agency BBDO and AT&T announced that its second season will premiere in mid-June. A reality show capturing the last summer before teens enter college, the program will debut on Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram and additionally this year on Vine and SnapChat. Variety reports the first season hit "ten million engagements," and viewers saw the show’s content 644 million times on all of its distributed outlets.

Netflix streams flowed 11 percent faster in January after agreeing to pay to directly feed videos through Comcast. Verizon and AT&T say they are in talks with Netflix for a similar pay-for-access deal like Comcast’s. However, CNN reports the service streams fastest to broadband providers such as Cablevision and Cox, who have opted in for Open Connect – the service that gives customers direct Netflix access, without payment from Netflix.

Procter & Gamble has joined ConAgra Food for a marketing campaign aimed at helping to end child hunger. Consumers are prompted to enter codes from specially-marked packages online, with the companies donating 11.1 cents, the amount it costs Feeding America to provide one meal through a local food bank, for each code entered. Campaign includes ads, sponsorship of events and appearances by actor/host Mario Lopez.
Ipsos, the Social Media Advertising Consortium and social influence marketing platform Crowdtap released a new report on millennial media consumption habits, how they perceive media sources and how that perception impacts purchasing decisions. The findings include:
Millennials spend 18 hours a day with different types of media, often viewing on multiple devices.
- User generated content (UGC) pulls in 30 percent of a millennial’s time at 5.4 hours compared to 33 percent of radio, print and TV combined programming consumed.
- Millennials find UGC 35 percent more memorable than other sources.
- On a daily basis, 71 percent of millennials prioritize social media use.
"Conversations with peers have always been extremely influential on purchase decisions, and social media has made these conversations public, giving them huge reach," Crowdtap’s CMO Kassoway told Cynopsis. "The combination of millennials spending 30% of their media time with content created by their peers, and trusting and remembering it over other forms of media, provides marketers with a powerful medium to market with their consumers and enter marketing’s new frontier: social influence."
Twitter hired Baljeet Singh as its new Product Manager. Singh was previously a Google/YouTube executive helping to create the TrueView ad product.
SundanceTV has named Drew Pisarra as Vice President of Digital Media and Marketing, and promoted Mark Zadroga as Director of Online Content. Pisarra joined AMC in 2007 as the Director of Digital Media, and Zadroga joined the network in 2011 as a Senior Producer for SundanceTV.
Online ad company Intent Media has hired Noreen Henry as its new Vice President of Business. Henry was most recently Travelocity’s Senior Vice President of Global Partner Businesses.
