Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 11, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

An animated miniseries, a super-short-attention-span digital feed and a remix of some classics cartoons are on tap for Cartoon Network. The net debuted its 2014-15 slate yesterday under the new catchphrase "Always On" -a nod to its integrated cross-platform programming and distribution strategy. Coming later this year is digital "micro network" Cartoon Network Anything, which will serve up a constant stream of 10-15-second games, activities, trivia and clips. Content will be randomized, and fans can move to the next piece by swiping their screens. The net is wooing sponsors, touting the network as "the perfect platform for native advertising." Here are Cartoon’s Upfront highlights:
New Programming:
Over the Wall – Music-heavy, 10-part animated digital miniseries about brothers Wirt and Greg, who are trapped in a mysterious world. Created by Pat McHale and produced by Cartoon Network Studios, it features voice talent from Elijah Wood, Collin Dean and Melanie Lynskey.

Clarence – Series about an optimistic boy who wants to do everything, premieres April 14 at 7p. From creator Skyler Page, Clarence was conceived as part of the shorts development program at Cartoon Network Studios and already has a large online following.

We Bare Bears – Comedy about three bear siblings who awkwardly attempt to assimilate into human society. Created by Annie Award-winner Daniel Chong (Toy Story of Terror!), and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.
 
The Tom and Jerry Show – The iconic cat and mouse rivals are back in a fresh take on the classic series, produced by Warner Bros. Animation and premiering April 9 at 5:30p.

Be Cool Scooby-Doo! – From Warner Bros. Animation, the Scooby gang is back with a modern comedic twist on the beloved classic. With high school over and one last summer to live it up, the gang hits the road in the Mystery Machine, chasing fun and adventure.

WabbitA Looney Tunes Production – Bugs Bunny is back in a new series of comedic shorts. From Warner Bros. Animation, and featuring classic characters like Yosemite Sam and Wile E. Coyote, plus brand-new foes.

Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu – Cartoon and Lego are reintroducing Ninjago with six new half-hour animated specials in 2014, followed by all-new eps in 2015.

Sonic Boom – Gaming icon Sonic returns with a new look and the franchise’s first-ever CG animated TV series, co-produced by Sega of America and OuiDo.
 
Total Drama: Pahkitew Island – New island, new cast, "Same old disregard for human safety!" says the net.

Numb Chucks – Woodchuck brothers Dilweed and Fungus didn’t always see themselves as mystical Kung Fu saviors until they stumbled upon an infomercial featuring mega legend Woodchuck Morris’ mullet-fueled motivational kung-fu video "The Way of the Chuck!"

Beyraiderz – Sho, Jin and Leon find themselves trapped on a strange world once defended by the Six Mythic Beasts who upheld justice and brought prosperity for all through the battling BeyRaiderz tournaments.

Returning series include Adventuretime, Legends of Chima, Teen Titans Go! Mixels, The Amazing World of Gumball and Uncle Grandpa. Original programming for the net’s digital platforms includes Angelo Rules (season 2); high-school who done it Detentionaire; and inventions-gone-awry redux Rocket Jo.

Fuhu is taking its BabyFirst steps into TV programming production, and SVP, marketing Lisa Lee says this is just the beginning. The creator of the nabi tablet and BabyFirst are co-producing new animated series Albert & Junior, premiering this week on BabyFirst. The series aims to encourage curiosity and discovery – with a not so subtle nod to Fuhu’s nabi Jr. tablet. The character of Junior is modeled after the tablet. Eps are bite-sized–five minutes each-and will air exclusively on BabyFirst, available on DirecTV, Dish, Comcast, and AT&T U-verse -four times per day over the next 12 months. Content creation is "something we’ve always wanted to do, though never by ourselves," Lee tells CynKids. She says other production deals are already in the works. "We’re always trying to find ways to make what we do with our products more integrated and meaningful… the series is based around our approach to learning–that as you are playing, there’s something to learn." The company is exploring cross-marketing opportunities at retail for Albert & Junior, but nothing has been solidified yet.

It’s a trio of new teen and family films for MarVista Entertainment. The TV and film producer and distributor acquired If I Had Wings, about a blind 17-year-old teen who dreams of running for his high school’s cross-country track team; dance rivalry with a heart story Dance-Off; and Monkey In The Middle, about an 11-year-old boy who helps a monkey escape from a greedy fair operator. MarVista’s library exceeds 2,000 titles; the company provides programming to Disney Channel, NBC Universal and MTV among others.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Thomas is chugging into a new week of specials. Beginning March 17, PBS Kids will Thomas & Friends to the Rescue-themed week including two new eps "Taking Turns" on March 17 and "Tricks & Tales" on March 18.

DIGITAL UPDATE

The next incarnation of Disney’s WATCH TV Everywhere products will include both long and short form content, as well as gaming. Rita Ferro, EVP at Disney Media Sales and Marketing, tells CynKids version 2.0 will debut sometime this summer and include lots of bite-sized morsels. "We know kids are watching the full-length episodes but we don’t want to always look at it the same way we have been. We’ll be bringing all these characters, and stories to robust short-form content like kids are [consuming] OTT, on platforms like Roku and Xbox."

In an effort to reach multi-screening kids across media, Nickelodeon launched a free Kids’ Choice Awards multimedia book on Apple’s iBooks reader, according to Variety. The network is aiming to drive tune in for the KCAs, set to air live March 29 at 8p. The iBook includes photos, video, stats and quizzes about the current nominees and host Mark Wahlberg, plus content from the past years’ KCAs. The book will be updated leading up to the broadcast, and will include a live countdown clock to the show; a nominations ballot; a treasure hunt with items hidden throughout the book; and a 360-degree view of the awards’ trademark orange blimp, according to the article.

Anger Management: Rovio is touting its new Angry Birds Go! game at the E3 expo in LA this week. Details are still scarce, but a company press release promises, "All your favorite characters are returning for a brand new title that will bring you closer to Piggy Island than ever before."

LICENSING

ITV Studios Global Entertainment signed two new licensing partners for its Matt Hatter Chronicles: Hy-Pro International and GB eye will roll out new merch in late 2014.
