She may have raised the ire of animal rights group PETA for partnering with SeaWorld, but SeaWorld‘s new youth ambassador, 15-year-old Bindi Irwin, has other things on her mind. Namely, using digital and social media to entice her contemporaries to engage in environmentally responsible activities through the organization’s new Generation Nature multimedia platform. The just-launched GenN, located at SeaWorldKids.com includes a website, digital apps, video blogs, online games and activities that highlight a new animal each month-beginning with the sea turtle. Irwin, the 15-year-old daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, has grown up in front of the camera and hosted her own show, Bindi the Jungle Girl, on Discovery Kids. "I’m so excited to empower a new generation to create positive change on planet earth," Irwin tells CynKids. "It can be something as simple as cleaning up your yard, or organizing a beach cleanup with friends. And then you can send us photos and videos and share your ideas with kids around the world." Social media will play a big role. "Everything is so instant-we have it all at our fingertips, so why don’t we use these social media feeds to send out empowering messages, about things like the non-consumptive use of wildlife, while we’re at it… And I’m not just talking to kids in Australia who live in the Outback, I’m talking to kids who live in an apartment in New York, too. Walt Disney Studios’ new multiyear agreement with Shanghai Media Group Pictures for Disney writers and filmmakers and their counterparts at Shanghai to co-develop Disney-branded movies is the latest in a growing chain linking US and Chinese filmmakers. The partnership comes after a deal last December between Disney and Shanghai Media division BesTV New Media to provide digital entertainment that maximizes the two companies’ technology and marketing acumen. Disney last year debuted its film Iron Man 3 in China; the film featured a well-known Chinese actress and included footage shot in the country. Other studios looking East, including DreamWorks Animation, which set up production company Oriental DreamWorks.

Time Warner Cable is donating $500,000 to Boys & Girls Club of America as part of the company’s Connect a Million Minds program, established to introduce children to STEM concepts. The financial support will enable BGCA to launch a Do-It-Yourself STEM program for Boys & Girls Clubs around the country. Beginning this summer, the DIY STEM curriculum will engage attendees in a different form of STEM each week, with topics ranging from robotics to the complexities of electrodynamic propulsion. TWC "has benefited greatly from the contributions of engineers, developers, mathematicians and technology experts… We’ve also benefited greatly from families, the mothers and fathers and children who tune-in not only to be entertained, but educated," the company said in a statement.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Confirmation came Friday that Disney laid off approximately 700 employees at its Disney Interactive digital gaming unit. The cuts at the division, which had employed nearly 2,800 workers, had been anticipated but the number was higher than many expected. Disney Interactive "consolidated several lines of business as part of an effort to focus the division on a streamlined suite of high quality digital products," the company said in a statement. The latest round of layoffs follows the elimination of 50 Disney Interactive in January 2013, and the shuttering of Disney’s Austin, Texas-based Junction Point Studios.

Warner Bros. may be about to invest $18 million into YouTube gamer network Machinima. Recode reports previous Machinima investors Google, Redpoint Ventures and MK Capital are also participating; however, the number is much less than the $35 to $70 million Machinima was hoping for last spring. Machinima laid off 42 employees yesterday, and within the past year lost top executives including CEO and founder Allen DeBevoise.
