French pay-TV giant Canal Plus acquired Studio Bagel, YouTube’s top French comedy network with six million subscribers and 40 million monthly views. "Studio Bagel was looking for ways to provide additional means to its numerous talents, as well as new opportunities to showcase their work in innovative TV or movie formats," Bagel CEO Lorenzo Benedetti told Advanced Television. Last year, Canal Plus bought just under five percent of Maker Studios.
Nielsen and video ad platform Videology announced a new partnership yesterday, which allows broadcasters and advertisers to find TV audience online in a single platform. "With the television upfront season fast approaching, advertisers and agencies are asking how they can more holistically incorporate video into their television strategies," Videology CEO Scott Ferber told Cynopsis. "The underpinning for this type of analysis requires an established data source and common metrics that align with the way television is bought and sold today. Our expanded integration with Nielsen helps to do just that, by providing a single platform that brings the worlds of television and video together for planning, buying and measuring… "
… Speaking of Nielsen, A new study from Nielsen and Simulmedia, "The Data-Driven Future of Video Advertising," says that while "the tale of two silos is coming to an end," the difference between the relationship-based process of buying and selling ads for TV, versus the programmatic way many online decisions are made is significant. "Building and managing trust between buyers, sellers and third parties will play a significant role in determining the way television and online video advertising eventually come together," said the report. Conclusions were based on discussions with industry thought leaders.
Online TV may not be the answer to live events, as ABC learned during its live stream of Sunday’s Academy Awards. Quartz reported the stream on ABC’s sites and mobile apps constantly cut out, and Twitter was aflame with complaints. CTV‘s live stream also took a nosedive, and even the network notoriously known for live streaming TV, Aereo, had problems during the award ceremony…
… Aereo, by the way, got some bad news from the United States government. In a brief filed Monday, the government said Aereo, which captures over-the-air signals via antennas to distribute to its subscribers, "must obtain licenses to perform the copyrighted content on which its business relies." Court case begins April 22.

Microsoft is planning to go beyond Windows phones by integrating Xbox Live to iOS and Android gaming. The Verge reports the move would bring another alternative for Xbox owners to earn achievements, find friends and play through multiple platforms. Google Play and Apple’s Game Center already uses a similar function.
Free movie streaming app from Screen Media Ventures, Popcornflix, is expanding internationally to UK/Ireland, Australia/New Zealand and Scandinavia. Those within those three major markets can access the app on Android and iOS devices.

Adap.tv‘s programmatic TV buying product will launch with Magna Global as its first major media agency on board. Magna Global has been running digital and TV campaigns through the Adap.tv platform already, and the company says when the product launches it should have TV inventory from 100 cable networks.

Ellen DeGeneres’ Twitter stunt during the Oscar telecast deserved its own award: the 11-celeb selfie was, as DeGeneres wanted, the most re-tweeted tweet in history. It was re-tweeted 2.6 million times, unseating previous champ President Obama. Other notable Twitter numbers during the Academy Awards were:
- 14.7 million tweets during the broadcast from 8:30 p.m. to midnight ET on Sunday.
- The top Tweet Per Minute was DeGeneres’ celeb selfie photo at 10:07 p.m. ET with 254,644 TPM.
- The most tweeted about nominees: Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt and Gravity director and Best Director winner, Alfonso Cuaron.
- The most tweeted about films: Gravity, Frozen and 12 Years a Slave.
Hulu has hired Tim Connolly as Head of Distribution. Connolly joins Hulu from The Walt Disney Company, where he was VP of Video Distribution and New Product Development.
Microsoft‘s new CEO Satya Nadella shook up the company yesterday, appointing former Executive Vice President of Advertising Mark Penn to the new role of Chief Strategy Officer. At the same time, Microsoft’s EVP of Business Tony Bates and former CEO of Skype and current VP of Marketing Tami Reller are departing the company.
Integral Ad Science is opening offices in Singapore and Germany, and has hired Olaf Mahr in German Stephan Dolan in Singapore to lead the expansion.
Jaan Tallinn has been named to the Advisory Board for Nanotronics Imaging. Tallinn is known for his work as a founding engineer for Skype and Kazaa.
