Nielsen’s latest Total Audience Report included the insight that US adults spend 10 hours and 30 minutes per day connected to media, the same amount as one year ago. Adults 50-64 spend more time per day on media than any other age group; A18-34 spend more than one-third of their daily media usage on smartphones; and black adults spend nearly 13 hours per day across all media. In other findings:
* Streaming devices and services continue their ascent. Enabled smart TV penetration grew to 41 percent in September 2018 from 32 percent in September 2017 as users continue to replace their older television sets.
* Internet enabled TV-connected devices can be found in 68 percent of US households, up from 63 percent in September 2017.
* Streaming video on demand (SVOD) content is now available in 67 percent of TV homes, compared to 61 percent one year ago. Year-over-year growth is also occurring among households of all races and ethnicities. Eight out of 10 Asian American, seven out of 10 Hispanic and six out of 10 Black households subscribe to an SVOD service.
* Time spent on TV-connected devices and app/web on smartphones increased across all demographics. Time per day on smartphones increased by 23 minutes for both Q18-34, more than any other group or platform.
* Older demographic group’s share of daily time spent with TV-connected devices and app/web on a smartphone increased from Q3 2017 to Q3 2018.
Frustration with mobile streaming video is on the rise, according to a new survey from software company Penthera, with OTT users less tolerant of tech problems than they were a year ago. Eighty-eight percent of respondents said they respond to streaming problems by either giving up and trying again later, stopping use of a particular service, canceling their subscription, or writing a negative review in the App Store. Download was seen as a solution to streaming problems, with 59% saying they expect a streaming service to offer the feature, and 67% saying they’d pay a premium of up to $5 for the feature.
There’s a strong need to clarify not only what a Customer Data Platform is and isn’t, but also how they can deliver value to marketers, according to Winterberry Group’s new research, “Deconstructing Customer Data Platforms: Myth vs. Reality.” While more than 100 companies describe themselves, or are described by others, as a CDP, fewer than 20 are true CDPs, according to Winterberry’s definition, which is: Platforms that are able to ingest and integrate customer data from multiple sources; offer customer profile management; support “real-time” customer segmentation; and make customer data accessible to other systems. “Customer Data Platforms have emerged as a solution for the ever-growing speed, volume, variety and governance requirements of customer data,” said Michael Harrison, managing director at Winterberry Group. “Unfortunately, the market is rife with confusion and misconceptions about CDPs’ capabilities.”
A preliminary study from Stanford, funded by Apple, found that wearables can identify heart irregularities. Of the participants who received irregular pulse notifications, one third followed up with an ECG patch and were found to have atrial fibrillation. The study included only Apple watches.

Apple announced an updated version of its AirPods wireless earphones that includes hands-free access to Siri and an optional wireless charging case that can be used with a wireless charging pad.
HP unveiled its Reverb VR headset, offering 2160 x 2160 pixels for each eye, and just 1.1 pounds, at the Game Developers Conference. A Pro edition will go on sale for $649 starting in late April, while a consumer version will be priced at $599.
Sony’s PlayStation Vue is expanding its multi-view feature, allowing users to simultaneously watch three programs at once, to Apple TV subscribers. Sony also said the multi-view feature on PS4 is getting two updates: real-time program changing, and new filters.
Pixelworks, provider of visual processing solutions, announced that Black Shark’s newest gaming smartphone, the Black Shark 2, incorporates the Pixelworks Iris visual processor for a more immersive mobile gaming experience. In addition to Super Cinema Mode, based on Pixelworks TrueClarity MEMC (motion estimation, motion compensation) technology, the Black Shark 2 introduces Pixelworks’ multi-adaptive display modes, which preserve Black Shark’s visuals across all mobile conditions by optimizing the appearance of the display for the brightness and tone of the ambient lighting environment.
Google has a game streaming service, Stadia, launching this year, announced Google CEO Sundar Pichai at the Game Developers Conference. The service, designed to let users play high-end games on most screens with minimal download time and no loss of fidelity, is the company’s “next big effort to build a game platform for everyone,” said Pichai.
The European Commission ordered Google to pay $1.7 billion for suppressing competition, ruling the company prevented rivals from fairly competing and innovating with regard to online advertising with Google’s AdSense contracts.
MySpace announced that “as a result of a server migration,” photos, videos and audio files that users uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available. While the social media platform has been eclipsed by Facebook and Twitter since its heyday, when it was purchased for $580 million by NewsCorp. In 2005, it is still used as an archive. There have been complaints for several months that links on the platform weren’t working.
