A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM NICKELODEON
Nickelodeon is All for One. Nickelodeon meets viewers at every stop on their path to content. All-for-One programming means content flows freely across the Nickelodeon ecosystem. From popular shows to creative marketing messages, brands and IP reach consumers on multiple screens and platforms.
02.26.15 Good morning. It’s Thursday February 26, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.
At its Upfront last night Nickelodeon sent a not-so-subtle message to advertisers that its future is not entirely grounded in traditional TVnor its traditional ratings system. The network, whose key demo ratings have been slipping, announced it’s bringing back preschooler network Noggin, which in 2009 was flipped to Nick Jr., as a $5.99/month ad-free subscription service (hosted by Moose and Zee) delivered through a mobile iOS app. Noggin, which bows March 5, will pack content including Blue’s Clues, Miss Spider and Little Bear, which had their heyday on Nick a decade ago. Jim Perry, the net’s head of sales, told the audience Nick’s mobile audience has ground six-fold in the past two years, with 50 million downloads across apps. “As we know, C3 ratings don’t tell the whole story,” he added. “If we look over seven days, we see a 40 percent lift” in Nick programming. Much of the content in the pipeline will build on the network’s live-action coffers, including the previously announced School of Rock, Nick’s first co-production with Paramount Television, and these series in development:
* Game Makers (working title): Two 12-year-old girls start a multimillion-dollar gaming company and bring in rapper Double G as a partner. Created by Dan Schneider.
* Roll Call (working title): Single-camera shot in mockumentary style an older and younger brother who both find themselves in the seventh grade together. Exec-produced by Sharla Sumpter Bridgett.
* Make It Pop: Three very different girls come together to form their own K-Pop-inspired band. Created by Nick Cannon and Thomas W. Lynch.
* Talia’s Kitchen (working title): Inspired by the telenovela genre, the series follows a 14-year-old girl who moves in with her grandmother and discovers a love of cooking and one special boy. Created by Catharina Ledeboer.
* The W.I.T.’s Academy: Spun off from Every Witch Way, in the new series teenage Guardians would oversee young witches at a magical academy. Created by Catharina Ledeboer.
In other news from the event, held in NY’s Moynihan Station and including some riffing from the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ star Will Arnett and a performance by pop band Echosmith:
* Nick is formalizing consumer insights, partnership marketing and multimedia services under one new initiative called Inside Out Solutions aimed at offering brands reach across all its platforms.
* SpongeBob the Broadway show is well into development, and based on a preview of opening number “Bikini Bottom Day,” it’s going to be a high-energy mashup of weird and funusually a good combo for kids. Musicians including Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Lady Antebellum, John Legend and T.I. are providing original music for the show, directed by Tina Landau.

Nickelodeon Debuts Rich New Slate. Nickelodeon’s pipeline includes more than 600 premiere episodes across 25 new and returning series. Starting next month, content will include innovative formats and new genres.
Hit Disney Channel series Jessie may be ending its run after four seasons and 101 episodes but fans need not despair. The network ordered an untitled spinoff, which will return original series toppers Peyton List, Karan Brar and Skai Jackson to their starring roles as Emma, Ravi and Zuri Ross, respectively. Jessie creator Pamela Eells O’Connell is onboard to exec-produce.
More new production is under way at Disney XD. The network is rebooting DuckTales, an animated comedy based on the Emmy Award-winning series originally produced from 1987-90, for 2017. Produced by Disney Television Animation, the new series will again star Scrooge McDuck, his grandnephews Huey, Dewey and Louie, and Donald Duck. The original DuckTales is currently available on WATCH Disney Channel, and Disney Interactive features several DuckTales-themed items in the Disney Infinity toy box.
The Three Little Pigs look like sitting ducks in Sesame Street’s “House of Bricks” parody of House of Cards, which scored more than 1.1 million YouTube views in two days. The short stars the conniving Frank Underwolf in an uncanny sendup of Kevin Spacey’s notorious character on a quest for the White Brick House. “Sometimes to get what you want you have to be a bit if a blowhard.” See how they nailed it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92NXMtVtv8o
Disney’s Big Hero 6 is the latest “Risk-Free Movie” on Reelz, a promotion that offers VOD or PPV viewers reimbursement if they don’t like a film. Offer extends until Sunday, March 22.
PBS Kids series Peg+Cat will get into the groove March 2 thanks to a week of new musical-themed episodes in the “Peg Rocks!” sequence. During the week the duo will visit Radio City Music Hall, join a girl group, and flash back to the groovy sixties, all while exploring math concepts for the preschool set. Additionally, the brand is releasing a second musical album, Peg + Cat: Classics!,which pays homage to the 3 Tenors and includes expanded versions of songs that have appeared on the show since the first episode. It’s available for pre-order at a 50 percent discount on iTunes and Google Play and hits Amazon and Spotify on March 2.
