IN THE NEWS

Candice Bergen will star in ABC pilot Pearl, as a larger-than-life matriarch diagnosed with cancer who’s determined to control her family’s lives. Writer Andrew Reich (Friends) will exec produce the pilot with ABC Studios producing. Bergen’s last major series role was on Boston Legal.

Addressing worries about the number of ESPN subscribers declining, Bob Iger claims the tide has turned. In an earnings call Tuesday, the Walt Disney Company CEO said, “In the last couple of months, we have actually seen an uptick in ESPN…The vast majority of consumers still see tremendous value in the multi-channel universe and they consistently rank ESPN as the number one or number two most valuable channel within it.”

Speaking of, ESPN got high marks in the latest Beta Research Cable Operator Study. A national sample of 100 cable operators were asked to estimate the amount per month per subscriber networks were worth to their system. “On average value to cable operators, the top three networks (ESPN, ESPN2 and NFL Network) were sports networks,” Beta’s president, cable division, Andrew Klein, tells Cynopsis, noting that the ranking of Fox Sports 1 increased from 14th in 2014 to 7th in 2015.

HBO Now counts 800,000 subscribers, revealed HBO CEO Richard Pepler during Time Warner’s earnings call on Wednesday. That’s less than analysts had estimated, but, “We’re just getting started,” said Pepler. “I think we’re going to make a lot of progress.” Pepler pointed out the standalone streaming service, launched in April, has not yet been released on Playstation and Xbox platforms, or released content from sub drivers Jon Stewart, Bill Simmons or the Vice Daily News Show.

Bob Costas will be the one breaking Olympic records in August, hosting NBC’s primetime coverage of the Rio Games for a most-ever eleventh time. Costas called the Olympics “a three-week mini-series which, if done well, should bring viewers not only memorable athletic performances, but a sense of the host city and country, and an appreciation of what is a truly global gathering.”
