In contrast to the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony held Saturday in LA honored a diverse group of actors. Winners in television categories included:
Idris Elba (Luther) and Queen Latifah (Bessie) for Outstanding Actor/Actress in a Movie/Miniseries
Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder) for Outstanding Actor/Actress in a Drama Series
Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) and Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black) for Outstanding Actor/Actress in a Comedy Series
Downton Abbey for Outstanding Drama Ensemble, and Orange Is the New Black for Outstanding Comedy Ensemble

One highlight of the telecast: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler presenting the Lifetime Achievement to Carol Burnett. “Let’s all calm down about Leonardo DiCaprio and how hard it was to shoot The Revenant. OK?,” said Poeher. “So you slept in a horse and you ate bison liver, big whoop. [ed not: Leo laughed.] Carol would have slept in that horse, worn it, done a song and a dance, and made a much funnier face about eating something very disgusting. The point is, Carol is better than all of us. We’re gonna give her a prize for it.” Said Burnett at the conclusion of a moving acceptance speech, “I’m so glad we had this time together.”

Do you think television offers more racial diversity than film, or did this year’s slate of Oscar nominees simply not reflect the diversity of talent? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

An effort by the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the Association of National Advertisers to come up with a set of media transparency principles for the industry hit a snag when the groups “ultimately couldn’t come to terms on language,” said the 4As’s, which issued its own “Transparency Guiding Principles of Conduct.” “The advertiser group sought to go beyond developing guideline language into prescribing contract language; the 4A’s believes that should be left for discussion between individual agencies and clients and does not believe that is the role of an industry trade association,” said the group. Calling the 4A’s guidelines “premature,” the ANA said they “fail to fully or adequately reflect the best interests of marketers.”
