PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

It’s so long to Universal TV for Mindy Kaling, who signed an exclusive, long-term overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group. Kaling had been at Universal TV for 15 years. Under her new pact, she’ll develop, write and produce TV projects at Warner Bros. TV, including comedy and drama series, longform/event series, unscripted programming and digital content. Her Kaling International production company will produce her new series in association with Warner Bros. TV, Warner Horizon Scripted TV or the TV Group’s digital studio, Blue Ribbon Content.

Starz announced series development of Kin, a multi-generational family drama from writer Davita Scarlett (Queen Sugar, Constantine) and Hello Sunshine. Reese Witherspoon (Big Little Lies, Gone Girl) and Lauren Neustadter (Are You Sleeping) will serve as exec producers for Hello Sunshine alongside Scarlett, who developed the project with Chester Jones III (Hey Diddle Diddle).

BBC Two commissioned six-part comedy Afternoons (working title) from Tom Werner, exec producer of Roseanne and The Connors, and Iain Morris and Damon Beesley and Caroline Leddy, who worked on The Inbetweeners.  Series focuses on the friendship and misadventures among three young soccer players on the fictional English Premier Club team. Werner is the chairman of real-life British soccer team Liverpool; he’ll exec produce the new series.

Andie MacDowell and Kathleen Turner will topline the untitled Fox dramedy pilot, formerly known as Let’s Spend the Night Together, inspired by the French series Quadras. Entire first season of the project, from Californication creator Tom Kapinos, Empire director and exec producer Sanaa Hamri, Endemol Shine North America and 20th Century Fox TV, takes place over the course of a single night at a wedding.

Otto Bathurst (Black Mirror, Robin Hood) will direct upcoming Showtime series Halo, based on the Xbox franchise. Kyle Killen (Awake) is in as exec producer, writer and showrunner. The series has an initial nine-ep order and will begin production later this year. It’s produced by Showtime in partnership with 343 Industries, along with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television.

Netflix renewed horror series The Haunting of Hill House for another season, just four months after it debuted on the streamer and became a breakout hit. In a twist, it’s going to be an anthology series with a new name – The Haunting of Bly Manor – new story and new characters. Creator, exec producer and director Mike Flanagan and exec producer Trevor Macy will continue at the helm under a multiyear overall television deal with Netflix.

Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín’s Fabula signed a first-look deal with Fremantle to develop original English- and Spanish-language dramas that Fremantle will distribute. Fabula, the production house behind Oscar winner A Fantastic Woman, already was collaborating with Fremantle on an eight-part Spanish-language psychological thriller.

TECH TALK

In an evolving situation, YouTube terminated 400-plus channels and deleted tens of millions of comments after creators, users and advertisers on the service expressed concern over videos being used to exploit children. The move follows swift decisions by companies including Epic Games, Disney and Nestle to pull advertising. Other companies including Peloton have asked YouTube to investigate further.

Video tech company Kaltura, known for helping media companies and operators transform their services to Cloud TV, is launching a new mobile SDK service to help customers like Beeline/Vimpelcon provide faster, smoother playback for mobile devices regardless of their level of internet connectivity. To combat typical issues like play failures and boost flexibility for service providers, it will also include HEVC support, real-time analytics, as well as multiple ad solutions support including Facebook Audience Network. “The enhanced Cloud TV Platform SDK improves Quality of Experience (QoE) issues caused by slow load times, which is considered a primary churn motivator,” Kantura CEO Ron Yekutiel tells Cynopsis. “The new capability monitors internet connectivity data at the network level in addition to device and player-level data and improves playback start time performance – increasing user satisfaction.”

ADVERTISING & MEASUREMENT

In a move with implications for marketers, programmers and OEMs, Nielsen launched a new technology, product and commercial initiative, Nielsen Advanced Video Advertising, that will focus on expanding and innovating addressable advertising for Smart TVs and beyond. To further accelerate the initiative, Nielsen for $11.25 million acquired Sorenson Media, an addressable TV tech provider that will help transform TV from a one-to-many to a one-to-one medium by powering addressable ad delivery and measurement. “It is clear that the future of TV is addressable,” said Kelly Abcarian, General Manager, Advanced Video Advertising Group, Nielsen. “With this end-game in mind, Nielsen has made several strategic acquisitions over recent years that, when combined, will serve as the foundation for a new end-to-end addressable advertising platform.  We recently launched an addressable pilot in five markets with CBS, A+E Networks and several other broadcasters to better understand the consumer experience and impact of addressability on broadcasters.  Adding Sorenson’s capabilities to Gracenote’s ACR technology and Qterics’ privacy management platform will enable us to create a powerful solution that will help us deliver on the promise of addressable TV advertising.”
