Spotify will finally go beyond the music: The streaming service is launching video content this week on its Android app. The iOS app will see video content added to its app next week. It will only be on Spotify’s mobile platform at this point and there’s no word if the video content will ever make it onto the desktop version. This has been brewing since last spring, when Spotify announced its plans to distribute videos along with the music it is known for. It has been testing video on its apps over the past few months. The videos will be short clips though some original series are being developed for the streaming service.
Apple released a minor update for the new Apple TV on Monday. The new tvOS 9.1.1 OS includes some bug fixes and the release of the Podcasts app for Apple TV.
Conan O’Brien has always been big on using social media for content distribution and his efforts have paid him dividends over the years. Now O’Brien’s YouTube channel has passed 2 billion video views. More than 6.2 billion minutes have been watched on the channel. The channel’s most-watched clip is "Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, and Conan Help a Student Driver," which has more than 26 million views.
The turnover continues at Twitter. A number of senior execs are leaving the organization, including Katie Jacobs Stanton, the company’s VP of Global Media; Skip Schipper, head of HR; Kevin Weil, SVP of Product; and SVP of Engineering Alex Roetter. The head of Vine, Jason Toff, is also leaving the company. He will head to Google, where he will work on virtual reality. However, Twitter will imminently announce a new Chief Marketing Officer – an as-yet unknown female exec from a major brand, according to Re/code. Twitter’s quarterly earnings results are due to be announced on Feb. 10. Many eyes will be watching.
A new movie channel is bringing movies from Korea, subtitled in English, to fans in the U.S. and Canada. The CJ E&M Movie Channel currently features nearly two dozen movies from South Korea to premium subscribers at digital OTT network DramaFever.
Rubicon Project and automated TV ad platform AdMore have entered into a new strategic alliance that will have Rubicon powering the automation technology for AdMore via its Guaranteed Orders platform. That will bring possible programmatic advertising solutions the more than 1,700 national and local television affiliates using AdMore.
Centro, a provider of enterprise-class software for digital advertising, today announced that it has been awarded the 2016 IAB Sales Excellence Awards. This award recognized individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exemplary leadership and achievements in digital advertising sales. In addition, Ian Trider, RTB Manager at Centro, received an individual IAB Service Excellence Award as well.

E! Online will premiere its first scripted digital comedy series Tuesday. Hashtaggers, with guest stars including William Shatner, Ian Ziering, and Johnny Weir, follows a completely dysfunctional group of people who work together at a social media agency geared to celebrity clientele, who don’t do their jobs particularly well.
Refinery29 announced at Sundance the creation of ShatterBox Anthology, a series that provides emerging female filmmakers the chance to showcase their work. The short film series with creative support from Sundance Institute will explore the dynamics of power through the lens of 12 female storytellers and feature the directorial debut of Chloe Sevigny.
YouTube’s new subscription service, YouTube Red, showed off some of what it plans to trot out for consumers at the Sundance Film Festival Sunday night. According to Variety, the unveiling was done by Susanne Daniels, who left MTV’s top content spot last year to become global head of YouTube Red.
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

IAB Research has it that digital media is on par with TV as a primary source of information on political candidates and issues for registered U.S. voters during this presidential election season. U.S. Hispanic (67%) and African American (60%) voters are more likely to get their political news via mobile, IAB’s research show. More than a third (35%) of registered voters say digital will be their most important method for getting candidate information during this election season.
Some other findings IAB Research discovered:
– 31% of registered voters read political articles and links shared by their friends on social media
– 25% of registered voters have seen an ad for a candidate on social media
– 24% of registered voters have “defriended” or “unfollowed” someone because of his or her political posts on social media platforms
Wibbitz has kicked off 2016 with two new tools to help publishers create video content optimized for social media platforms. One is its updated Editor and the other is the new Social Media Format. The latter allows publishers to turn existing text content into social-friendly videos. The advance Editor tool allows for greater customization and aims to make the editing process more intuitive and more flexible.
Online video-streaming service MUBI, which focuses on international art house cinema, is entering mainland China as part of a joint venture with Huanxi Media Group subsidiary Graceful, as Cynopsis Digital has previously noted. Now, the details are firming up a bit: The companies are aiming to debut the new service before November, according to Huanxi. Learn more here.
Singapore will stop analog TV broadcasts by the end of next year, according to its Ministry of Communications and Information. Even though national broadcaster Mediacorp converted its seven free-to-air TV channels to digital years ago, it has also continued to broadcast in analog. This will cease in 2017.
Suzanne Kolb has been named EVP and General Manger of Discovery Digital Networks. Kolb was previously the president of E! Entertainment.
IAB has appointed Lauren Wiener, president of buyer platforms at video ad network Tremor Video, to be the new Chair of its board. Jim Norton, AOL’s Global Head of Media Sales, is this year’s Vice Chair.
Brad Dobbs has joined PushSpring as its Director of Publisher & Platform Partnerships. Dobbs was formerly at Amazon, where he has been the manager of mobile games user acquisition.
