01/22/15: NBCUniversal details Super Bowl big event strategy; Turner brands unite for upfronts; NASCAR gives merchandising an overhaul

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 22, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBCUniversal will once again go big for its turn hosting the Super Bowl this year, announcing the company’s “most comprehensive Super Bowl promotional effort ever.” The push will span the likes of NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, MSNBC, USA, E!, Bravo, Syfy, The Weather Channel and Telemundo for its “Big Event Strategy,” along with NBC Sports Radio, NBC Sports Digital, and NBC Sports Regional Networks.

Until the game on Feb. 1 the cross-channel promotional content will include: Today’s Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker anchoring the morning program live from Super Bowl Central on Jan. 30 and 31; Jimmy Fallon hosting a special Super Bowl XLIX edition of The Tonight Show from Phoenix with the show running live that Sunday night; Brian Williams reporting from the city for NBC Nightly News; Billy Bush and Kit Hoover hosting Access Hollywood Live from Super Bowl Central on Jan. 29 and 30; and Dan Patrick offering five days of shows from Glendale ahead of the game. Other offerings include NHL Live and Premier League Live originating from the city, as will Golf Channel’s Feherty, MSNBC’s Hardball and Morning Joe, and E!’s The Soup.

“We are using the full force of America’s largest media company to market the Super Bowl,” said John Miller, Chief Marketing Officer, NBC Sports Group. “As an NBCUniversal symphony priority, numerous platforms, programs, channels, and websites will be focused on the Super Bowl with one simple goal — make the Super Bowl a massive television event.”

ON THE AIR

The NHL is expected to detail the return of the World Cup of Hockey on Friday, according to a report from TSN, with the international tournament expected to be held in Toronto on Sept. 2016 with eight teams in the mix (six countries and two all-star teams). The report state that the NHL and NHLPA told team executives that the event could generate up to $100 million in revenue.

The AT&T MLS All-Star Game is heading to Denver, with the league announcing that the July 29 event will take place at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. Broadcasts will take place at 9p on FOX Sports 1 and Unimas. Colorado Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni will serve as the head coach of the All-Stars against an elite international club to be named at a later date. The league will also bring back the Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game as part of the festivities for the second consecutive year.

We Need to Talk announced plans for its 2015 run with CBS Sports lining up the all-female, weekly hour-long sports show for CBS Sports Network this year with a series of specials, as well as two flights of the show, running in the Spring and Fall. The show makes its 2015 debut on Monday, Jan. 26 at 10p with the Spring season officially launching on April 28.

With more numbers in the books, FOX Sports 1 saw Sunday’s UFC Fight Night delivering 2,751,000 viewers, according to Nielsen, which makes it the most-watched MMA event ever on the channel and the most-watched MMA event on ad-supported cable television since 2009. Viewership peaked in the final quarter-hour, from 12-12:15a with 3,162,000 viewers. 

The NBA and Canal+ Afrique announced a new broadcast partnership delivering live and delayed NBA games and programming in French to 19 countries across Africa. The deal will see the company broadcast two live or delayed games per week on Wednesdays and Fridays local time as well as the First Round and Second Round of the NBA Playoffs.

Speaking of the NBA, TNT carries the announcement of the 2015 NBA All-Star starters during a special one-hour edition of TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by AutoTrader.com today at 7p. Following the unveil of the All-Star starting lineups, coverage will then feature a doubleheader showcasing the Spurs hosting the Bulls at 8p, followed by the Nets visiting the Clippers at 10:30p.

FOX carries Duke/St. John’s on Sunday, which could mark Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s becoming the only men’s college basketball coach with 1,000 career victories at 2p. Coverage begins on FOX at 1:30p with the Fox College Hoops Tip-Off pregame show which will feature taped messages from Duke icons like Bobby Hurley, Christian Laettner, Chris Collins and J.J. Redick.

In ski news, the “Super Bowl of men’s downhill ski racing” is coming back to cable, with Universal Sports Network and NBCSN set to showcase the 75th anniversary of the Hahnenkamm from Kitzbuehel, Austria starting Friday. Live coverage of Saturday’s highly-anticipated downhill race launches at 5:30a, followed by NBCSN’s telecast at 10:30a. Universal Sports and NBCSN will also have coverage of the super combined and slalom races from Kitzbuehel on Friday, Jan. 23 and Sunday, Jan. 25, respectively. Calling the action for Kitzbuehel and Schladming will be veteran play-by-play announcer Steve Porino and analyst Todd Brooker.

NBC Sports Digital is launching an NBC Sports Tumblr page that will host Super Bowl XLIX’s television advertisements immediately after they run on NBC on Feb. 1. The new page launched yesterday and can be accessed atNBCSports.com/Ads. Ahead of the game, the page will be populated with original content created by NBC Sports’ marketing media team, as well as from re-blogging NFL-related Tumblr posts. On game day, the page will transform into a hub for Super Bowl TV ads.

NASCAR’s famed merchandising is getting an overhaul, with the organization, along with NASCAR Team Properties teaming with Fanatics in a 10-year agreement for the sport’s at-track merchandise business. As part of the agreement, Fanatics acquired certain exclusive rights from NASCAR and NTP that will make the company the primary retailer of NASCAR, team and driver merchandise at all 38 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekends. The new trackside retail model will be phased in at NASCAR events this year, evolving from using solely haulers for each specific team or driver to displaying all merchandise in a climate-controlled superstore retail environment. Fanatics Apparel, the company’s manufacturing and customization division, will also produce merchandise to complement the already extensive product line that will be offered by authorized licensees.

ESPN revealed the sponsors for X Games Aspen, which starts today and runs through the 25 with live coverage on ESPN and ABC.  Harley-Davidson joins the roster of official sponsors alongside America’s Navy, GoPro, Jeep brand and Monster Energy. Additional sponsors include DuPont Kevlar, Microsoft Lumia, Oakley, Polaris, Skype and 7UP TEN, which is participating in the event for the first time this year. 
 
The National Hockey League will host the inaugural NHL Mascot Showdown during the 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend pitting 13 Eastern Conference Mascots against 13 Western Conference Mascots in two days of “friendly but fierce competition.” The action starts at NHL Fan Fair on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7p with the NHL Mascots going head-to-head in Broomball and Dodgeball matches.

Under Armour locked in Jordan Spieth to a 10-year extension of their partnership. As part of the extension, Spieth will be included in "international marketing, digital, print and social media campaigns" and take part in the development of Under Armour’s first golf shoe.

Sports marketing and media agency rEvolution, has been named as the media agency of record for Polaris Industries Inc. Off-Road Vehicles Division. The independent agency will drive Polaris’ Off Road Vehicles national and local media strategy, including planning and buying, across the sports and lifestyle landscape both in broadcast and digital.
 

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

William Morris Endeavor-IMG is getting deeper into the eSports game, acquiring Global eSports Management, which represents a slate of eSports personalities. WME -IMG will now represent eSports players who compete at the highest levels and participate in the top tournaments in the world.

World Golf Foundation is launching a new women’s website, www.GolfForHer.com, designed to boost women’s participation in the game. Contributing organizations include the LPGA, the PGA of America, the PGA TOUR, The First Tee, the USGA, ClubCorp, the Executive Women’s Golf Association, Golf Digest and GOLF 20/20, a subsidiary of the World Golf Foundation.

The National Basketball Players Association announced the tip off for an online vote to help select a new logo for the NBPA. The NBPA Logo Challenge saw over 300 entries submitted from over 40 states during the three week entry period. “The support we received from fans across the country for this initiative was outstanding, and demonstrates the reach of the NBPA in communicating that we are an open, progressive and inclusive organization,” NBPA Executive Director Michele Roberts said. “We are very excited to see what happens with this next step of fan voting and are looking forward to meeting the winner during All-Star Weekend in New York.”
