01/21/15: Netflix reports 57.4M globals subscribers for Q4; NATPE: YouTube will bring back Originals Channels by end of year; Will Arnett creating next Netflix series

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 21, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Netflix hit 57.4 million global subscribers, adding 13 million and generating $1.3 billion in revenue, the streaming service announced in its Q4 earnings report yesterday. However, U.S. subscriber rate is down from a year ago, dipping to 1.9 million this year from 2.3 million added in Q4 2013.
 
 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
YouTube
will reincarnate its Originals Channels by the end of year, Head of YT Originals Alex Carloss announced at NATPE yesterday. The programming on the channel will be tied into its Google Preferred ad program, with YT selecting native top talent to foster premium content. However, Carloss said the content will not take on the same scripted form currently coming out of Amazon or Netflix. YT originally launched the initiative in 2011 with $100 million to fund prominent creators.
 
Will Arnett
will star in the next Netflix series. The Arrested Development actor will co-write eight-episodes, called Flaked, along with Mark Chappell (The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret) and others. The series will premiere on the service sometime in 2016.
 
Overstock.com is taking a page from Amazon, and will launch a subscription video streaming service and digital media store for its Club O members. CEO Patrick Byrne made the announcement at NATPE yesterday, providing few details but that the service will run for $19.85 per year and include free shipping on other Overstock items (similar to Amazon Prime).
 
FremantleMedia International is teaming with AOL to bring long-form video series Connected to the international market. An adaptation of an Israeli factual series, the show is slated for a U.S in March 2015 on the AOL On Network. FMI will serve as global distributor, responsible for the distribution of the show outside of the U.S.; AOL Canada maintains an exclusive premiere window across Canada.
 
In other AOL news: #CandidlyNicole will return on Feb. 12, and two new series, That’s Racist With Mike Epps will debut on Jan. 26 and Inspired on Jan. 28. That’s Racist will follow the comedian and actor Epps as he explores the origins of humor in racial stereotypes. Inspired is co-produced by Oscar winning director Ron Howards’ production studio, New Form Digital, and features celebrities speaking about defining moments in their life.
 
My Country Nation (MyCN) revealed two new original series yesterday, called Karaoke Kab and Superfan Nation. The first series premiered on Jan. 20, and combines the premise of Cash Cab with karaoke set in downtown Nashville. Superfan Nation will debut tomorrow (Thursday), and features passionate fans of everything from music to sports to movies. The latest originals join the previously announced lineup on MyCountryNation.com, icluding Young in the Nation, Made in the USA, This Week in The Nation, Bloodline Barons, Camping With Kids and more.
 
Sony
’s scripted cop drama series, Powers, will debut the first three episodes on the PlayStation Network on March 10. The following seven eps will hit the service every week following, with the first ep available for free to non PS Network subscribers.
 
Oscar nominated documentary Last Days in Vietnam will stream for free on PBS sites and digital platforms from Feb. 5-7. In addition to the digital release and the TV broadcast on April 28 at 9p ET, the doc will also be accessible to rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon Instant Video, as well as through cable video-on-demand services.

and TBS plan to ramp up the social and digital experience during the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 25 at 6p ET. The networks will provide a team of social correspondents and influencers to report behind-the-scenes action with the hashtag #sagawards, while People.com will livestream the SAG Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show.
 
Animation multi-channel network Channel Frederator Network announced it signed 102 new channels, including The Big Lez Show, JonnyEthco and The Jam Cave. CFN boasts 1,324 channels, a combined 14,850,000 subscribers and 719 million views.
 
Comedy Central
’s series premiere of The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore is available to view on CC.com and the CC app. Wilmore was previously Jon Stewart’s correspondent, and was tagged to fill Stephen Colbert’s former time slot from Monday-Thursday 11:30p ET.

introduced the new Video Metrix Multi-Platform for mobile, OTT and desktop audience measurement using TV metrics for video content and advertising. The New York Times reports ComScore’s initial research revealed that counting the number of people watching content on video, mobile or other devices increased viewership by eight to 30 percent.
