NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

Amazon is taking on the silver screen, planning to acquire original movies for theatrical release and early-window distribution on its Prime Instant Video service. Feature films will not be available online the day of their theatrical release, but instead be available to Prime subscribers four to eight weeks after. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Amazon Original Movies division will be lead by former Good Machine co-founder Ted Hope, who also was most recently the CEO of indie film streaming service Fandor. The company expects to release 12 original movies every year. Amazon’s main competitor Netflix, previously announced that it was planning to produce 10-14 movies a year and currently holds a deal with Adam Sandler to make four movies to debut exclusively on the service.
 
Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz won’t be the only headliners of the Super Bowl Halftime Show during the Feb. 1 game. YouTube and Collective Digital Studios will also release its own halftime show. Hosted by YT’s Epic Meal Time’s Harley Morenstein, the program will feature more than 20 YT celebs, such as, Freddie Wong, Toby Turner and Rhett and Link. Bloomberg reports the show will also feature fake ads, including a 90’s style ad for sugary drinks from Wong. The live stream will broadcast on the AdBlitz channel, and showcase a postgame gallery with behind-the-scenes footage from Super Bowl commercials.
 
Yesterday, Endemol Beyond announced its global slate set to debut in 2015. The line-up includes: interactive gamer series Legends of Gaming: Germany (including gamer talent Herr Bergmann and Sturmwaffel), eight episodes of The Balls Theory on the FrenchBall channel, the new Le Debande French channel to premiere in February and the anticipated U.S. series The #Muthaship, Pitbull’s The Most Bad Ones and Gentlemen’s Code, Andy’s Hungry Voyage, Viner Brittany Furlan’s Extreme Homeless Makeover and more.
 
Mario Batali is creating another original series with Dailymotion. Entitled Feedback Kitchen, the five-episodes will mix-up music and cooking with musical guests, such as Patti Smith, Flea, The Edge, Josh Groban and Perry Farrell. It will premiere on Jan. 26.
 
PBS Digital Studios
’ partnership with YouTube pioneers Hank and John Green launched last week, with the new Crash Course series Astronomy. Hosted by Phil Plait (Slate’s Bad Astronomy blog), the first episode overviews astronomy topics that the series will cover, with new eps hitting the channel for the next 40 weeks every Thursday and Friday. In addition, a U.S. government course will begin this Friday and will be hosted by YT talent Craig Benzine (WheezyWaiter). Crash Course is an educational channel that will distribute vids on PBS’ YT network and through PBS LearningMedia.
 
People Now
, the daily live online show presented by Toyota on People.com, announced that Kathleen Rose Perkins (Episodes), Casey Wilson (Marry Me), Whitney Thore (My Big Fat Fabulous Live), Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio (Best New Restaurant), Donnie Wahlberg (Donnie Loves Jenny), Ian Ziering (Celebrity Apprentice), Christina Milian (Christina Milian Turned Up) and others will make guest appearances this week. The 20-minute program offers exclusive interviews, celebrity and entertainment updates, and news and human-interest stories Monday-Friday at 8:30a ET and 11:30a ET online.

Despite Amazon, Showtime and HBO’s wins at the Golden Globes last week, a new study from Cowen & Co. found Netflix still sits on top of the competition in terms of subscriber satisfaction. The research showed that Netflix users watched 7.7 hours of content per week, while Amazon’s Prime Instant Video users reported 3.5 hours, Hulu Plus at 4.1 hours, HBO Go with three hours and Showtime Anytime with 2.7 hours. Netflix also scored above other SVOD services when it came to user experience, receiving a 4.1 ranking (out of 5) compared to Amazon PIV’s 3.4, HBO Go’s 3.4, cable/satellite providers’ 3.2, Showtime Anytime’s 2.9 and Hulu Plus’ 2.9 ranking. Cowen & Co also polled what top Netflix offerings users looking forward to watch next, results included: season three of Orange is the New Black (64 percent), House of Cards season three (59 percent), the Disney/Marvel Daredevil series (17 percent), the fourth season of Longmire (16 percent) and the original sequel to Crouching Tiger, H

L’Oreal Paris is looking to snatch up its own version of a Michelle Phan beauty vlogger through a new global contest to sign a digital-savvy make-up designer. The Brush contest asks beauty designers to upload a three-minute video that will be judged by L’Oreal Paris execs and YouTube creators. The contest runs through Feb. 15, which then the public will have the chance to vote for the top 50 videos. The 12 winners will travel to Paris and attend a “beauty boot camp,” with the grand prize winner selected on May 1.
