Vimeo struck a deal with Maker Studios to use Maker content on the Vimeo-on-Demand platform. Maker still primarily uses YouTube as its distribution outlet along with its own Maker.tv, but this partnership will create another monetization gateway for its 55,000 creators beyond YT ad sales. Last October, YT CEO Susan Wojcicki revealed plans to roll out a video-subscription service for its creators.
Comedy Gives Back partnered with digital distributor Electric Sheep to launch comedy donation site Comicure. Clips from comedians such as Reggie Watts, Kevin Nealon and Lliza Shlesinger will be on the site, and in return, viewers can donate to causes Feeding America and Malaria No More. “Comicure allows us to expand our window of monetization from a single event to a virtually continuous platform for social giving and awareness to charities,” CGB CEO Amber J. Lawson said.
The Orchard and Fanclub Media are combining both companies’ action sports film catalogues. The first film slated for 2015 will be On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter, hitting iTunes on Feb. 17. Fanclub Media CEO Jim Martin and Vice president Marc Cuevas will join The Orchard team and run acquisitions, marketing and client management.
Digital fitness SVOD service Acacia TV added four new themed workouts this month, including 20-minute routines from yoga trainer Kristin McGee, strength training coach Deazie Gibson, ReebokONE ambassador Gerren Liles and Lululemon ambassador Amanda Young. Additionally, the fitness channel launched a private Facebook community for members only, featuring certified coach Alison Heilig, who will offer tips and motivation. Acacia TV costs $6.99 a month.
Woven Digital debuted its first original series, Luminaries, on UPROXX this week. The show, which already surpassed a million views, showcases successful young inventors. The first ep features 19-year-old Easton LaChappelle, who uses 3D printing to create prosthetic limbs.

Turner Digital has hit 124 million average monthly unique visits last year, a 14 percent increase compared to the previous year; the uptick is driven by the 53 percent increase in its mobile audience. Turner finished ahead of CBS Interactive, Comcast NBCUniversal, The Weather channel and ESPN.

D’oh! Homer and the rest of The Simpsons will soon be playable characters on Minecraft through a new deal between Xbox and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products. The character pack will be available to download in late February for Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of the game for $1.99. Minecraft has more than 100 million downloads since it was launched in 2009.
PBS Kids released the first app for series OOD Squad yesterday. Called ODD Squad Blob Chase, the app uses math skills to solve problems in order to get blobs across bridges, over walls, through tubes and back into their containers. It’s available to download on the iPad, Android tablets and Amazon Fire tablet.
Nickelodeon launched the Blaze and the Monster Machines app, inspired by the preschool series with a mix of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum. The app features two modes, Race and Build, which encourage children to apply critical thinking skills and learn scientific principles. Nick has released more than 20 preschool apps so far.
