Showtime scored horror-comedy series Shining Vale, from creator Sharon Horgan, Trial & Error co-creator Jeff Astrof and Kapital Entertainment. The net gave the project from Warner Bros. TV, about a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town in a house in which atrocities have occurred, a pilot production commitment from the network.
CNBC is expanding its lineup in 2018 with a mix of new and returning series and seven development projects in the pipeline. New originals include BYOB: Be Your Own Boss, Staten Island Hustle and Deadly Rich. The network also greenlit a fourth season of Jay Leno’s Garage, currently airing original episodes on Thursdays at 10p, season 12 of American Greed and a seventh season of Secret Lives of the Super Rich. Speaking at TCA, Jim Ackerman, EVP, primetime alternative programming, said since the net launched original unscripted programming it has become the fastest-growing cable entertainment network among A25-54 in primetime, with its audience moving younger and more affluent. “The world of business will always be a great backdrop for storytelling and we’re committed to serving up more titles and characters that capture the entrepreneurial spirit in all of us,” he said.
Fox ordered three more eps of midseason comedy LA To Vegas ahead of the airing of the second ep.
Global Road Entertainment inked a first-look TV deal with director/producer Adam Shankman and producer Jennifer Gibgot’s Offspring Entertainment. First pair of projects to be developed under the deal are previously announced Wolfgang, about Mozart, and an untitled comedy project with actor/producers Carlos and Alexa PenaVega
Viceland announced a season 2 pickup for hip-hop artist 2 Chainz’s series Most Expensivest, and a six-episode extension for the drag comedy show The Trixie & Katya Show starring the breakouts from RuPaul’s Drag Race. That series will return Wednesday, January 24 alongside the premiere of Slutever, featuring Vogue sex columnist and blogger Karley Sciortino.
Remember summer? Cooking Channel wrapped production on the third season of Beach Bites with Katie Lee. The six-ep season will premiere in June 2018.
“I scare because I care – that’s a famous tagline from Monsters Inc. That is a summary of what I do.” Before a packed room at TCA, Rose McGowan touted her new E! docuseries Citizen Rose, and criticized the media’s role in covering her movement to bring sexual assault and misconduct in Hollywood to light. “Do you understand what I have been through for 20 years? My being here is a miracle,” said one of the earliest and most outspoken of those accusing Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. “It’s not an accident that I’m sitting here and I earned it.” McGowan cried foul over some in the media painting her as “crazy.” E! will air a two-hour Citizen Rose doc on Tuesday, January 30, followed by four episodes in the spring.
NBC’s upcoming high school theater drama Rise has some baked-in Hamilton connections—producer Jeffrey Seller is the man behind the Broadway powerhouse—but isn’t necessarily going to be one of the Great White Way opus’ featured in the series. “Maybe in season 12,” jested Seller at TCA, while exec producer Jason Katims said the selection of a musical each season “depends on where the story is coming from… what are the characters going through? We’d choose a show that resonates with that.” Based on the Michael Sokolove novel Drama High, Rise premieres March 13 at 10p.
Kerry Washington rolled into Vegas yesterday to tout her new Facebook Watch drama Five Points – and the importance of social media in building a community around a show – at CES. Her ABC show Scandal is a bona fide hit, but in the early days, she said, the team “had to push to create community and to build a community around the show that could uplift it.” The 10-ep Five Points follows five high school students in Chicago through one life-changing event, telling the story from different perspectives. Washington said the show deals with “really important coming of age issues,” including the LGBTQ community, gun violence, drugs and bullying. The show is produced by Washington’s production company Simpson Street and digital studio Indigenous Media.
Washington wasn’t just touting her show, she was part of Facebook’s big Watch push at CES. Key to the success of her show, and the entire platform, is getting users to spend more time on Facebook. Facebook is creating custom groups around some of the issues the series tackles, and encourage conversation among viewers via the groups. Fidji Simo, Facebook VP of product in charge of product, said it was critical that Watch work for the company’s partners. “Obviously, there’s the creative angle, but there’s also the economic angle. We are committed to working with partners to make these shows work economically as well.”
Fox Business Network will kick off the fourth season of primetime reality series Strange Inheritance on Monday, January 15 at 9p. Hosted by Jamie Colby, the series will debut with a two-day premiere featuring back-to-back eps on both Monday and Tuesday, January 16.
Nat Geo will premiere Chain of Command on Monday, January 15 at 9p. Narrated by Chris Evans (Captain America, The Avengers), the eight-part series probes, from top commanders to boots on the ground, the U.S. military’s mission to combat violent extremism in locales such as Iraq, Afghanistan, west Africa and Latin America.
FX will premiere Ryan Murphy’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story on Wednesday, January 17.

Based on the life of ad exec turned director Martin Edwards, and exec-produced by eshapTV‘s Evan Shapiro (Portlandia, Take My Wife) with Chrissy Mazzeo and Anthony Veneziale, who also star, the ensemble cast of the six-part series also features Lin-Manuel Miranda, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Don Reed and newcomer Eirinie Carson.
Debmar-Mercury teamed with Michael Eisner’s privately held media and entertainment shingle The Tornante Company to offer off-Netflix eps of BoJack Horseman to basic cable. Will Arnett leads the offbeat show, the first animated adult comedy series to appear on the streaming service.
Fox Sports, the exclusive English-language home of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, signed deals with Snapchat and Twitter to provide coverage specifically for the platforms. Fox Sports will produce a 30-minute live show with host Rachel Bonnetta, streamed exclusively on Twitter each match day (27 shows, in total), and also will provide near-live video highlights to Twitter for each game. Both the live show and video clips will include advertising packages on Twitter available for sponsors.

NBC and State Farm last night launched a multiplatform, custom content campaign anchored by three creative pieces filmed in the style of the net’s This Is Us. The content, created by NBC Creative Partnerships, will air during the broadcast of two more eps of the series, and complementary content also will be developed for and distributed on the platforms of NBCU sisters BuzzFeed and Vox Media. Expect a social media push to encourages fans of the show to submit photos of special items that have been a part of their own family lore using a co-branded hashtag.
Inspired by the network’s upcoming drama Rise, which premieres Tuesday, March 13 and follows the effects a high school theatre department has on its surrounding community, NBC is launching R.I.S.E. America, a program that grants $500,000 to high school theater programs across the country. The program will award 50 high schools a $10,000 grant that will enable them to enhance or revitalize their theater programs. Eligible high schools can apply at NBC.com/Rise. Applications through Tuesday, February 6, with winning schools announced in March.
