NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Netflix
will premiere original series Marvel’s Daredevil on April 10, and will bring back Marco Polo for a ten-episode second season, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos announced at yesterday’s Television Critics Association panel. Other premieres: Tina Fey’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (13 eps on March 6); Ever After High: Spring Unsprung (Feb. 6); Mako Mermaids (Feb. 13); Bloodline (March 20) and Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin series Grace and Frankie (May 8).
 
Vimeo signed a multi-series deal with New Form Digital, the production venture from Discovery Communications and producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. NFD will debut original series from YouTube celebs PJ Liguori (619,000 subscribers) and Sawyer Hartman (1.7 million subs) on the video site. Called Oscar’s Hotel and Parallax, each of the ten-episode series will be available on Vimeo on Demand in 2015.
 
Air Bud Entertainment (ABE) announced its new YouTube channel, Air Bud TV. The company behind the Air Bud and Air Buddies franchise will feature new original, short form content and sneak-peaks of upcoming films. ABE’s new film with Fandango Family Screening Series, Russell Madness, hits theatres Feb. 21.
 
SheKnows Media (8.5 million unique visitors a month) signed an exclusive partnership with Canadian publisher representative Jones Media. SheKnows recently acquired BlogHer Inc., StyleCaster Media Group and tripled its unique visitors in Canada from 2.7 million to 7.45 million.

NBC
and iHeartRadio will bring back the iHeartRadio Music Awards on March 29 from 8-11p ET in Los Angeles, and rebroadcast it on iHeartRadio stations and digital platform. Fans choose the winners via hashtags voting on Facebook and Twitter; the 2014 awards saw 65 million votes across the social platforms.
 
Discovery
’s DNews and NASA SpaceOut will host a special SpaceOut Google+ hangout today at 3p ET with NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman. He will discuss what it’s like to live on the International Space Station, and answer burning questions such as, do astronauts really eat freeze-dried ice cream?
 
That’s All Right: In honor of Elvis’ 80th birthday today, Spotify analyzed its 50 million users’ listening habits to discover the king of rock and roll’s biggest fans around the world. Chile streams the most Elvis songs (U.S. ranks 27th), and the top song was “Suspicious Minds.” Spotify also created “The Elvis Influence” web app that connects any artist to Elvis, based on artistic influence, as well as an “Elvisualization” audiographic to map his influence on modern artists. 
 

 
CES 2015

 
TiVo released results of its second annual Tablet and Smartphone Streaming Analysis Report For CES, and the winners of the sixth annual Battle of the Consumer Electronics Brands at CES. Key findings include:
 
Tablet and Smartphone Analysis
: A comparison from July 2014 to November 2014 showed that streaming is more prevalent on weekends, with 20 percent more sessions on Saturday, compared to the weekday. Streaming peaked on the Sunday before Thanksgiving and the subsequent week for programs and sporting events. Additionally:
–      Drama was the number-one streamed genre; The Walking Dead was the top streamed TV primetime program; NFL Football was the overall top streamed program.
–      More than 30 percent of DVR users are streaming content to multiple devices; 20 percent of out-of-home streaming is viewed on a smartphone.
 
Battle of the Brands:
Brands were evaluated on how well their ads resonated with TiVo subscribers, measured by how they watch, rewind or fast-forward through spots during time-shifted viewing. The winners are:
OTT Streaming Service Netflix won over Hulu Plus, with 23 percent less fast-forwarding.
Retails OutletsKmart topped Best Buy and other mass merchants.
Television Vizio conquered Samsung for the first time in six years.
WirelessMetro PC won over major players AT+T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.
TabletsAmazon Fire topped Apple iPad, Microsoft Surface and Samsung Galaxy.
SmartphonesHTC One won over Apple iPhone, LG G3, Nokia Lumia and Samsung Galaxy.
 
Digital Hollywood Experience
hosted a panel called Original Video Programming – Internet TV Goes Mainstream, to discuss the merging of entertainment with Netflix, Amazon, Discovery, and Turner. “We’re seeing a lot more nontraditional players entering the original video space, from social platforms and publishers to streaming services,” panelist and Believe Entertainment co-founder Dan Goodman told Cynopsis. “That opens up even more nontraditional outlets for premium video, while key players in original video programming are exploring new content.”

Video tech platform Kaltura will power Webedia’s video on TV and movie destination Moviepilot.de. “As mobile video continues to grow, it was clear to us that HTML5 shouldn’t be just a fallback option, but the core of the player, so we began to look for a more forward-looking, innovative video solution that excelled at delivering video and video ads seamlessly on any device,” Webedia Germany’s Product Manager for Video and Mobile Stefan Tie said.

Jonathan Schwartz joined LIN Mobile as Director of publisher Development. He was previously General Manager at Bankrate Inc.
 
Click 3X hired Brad Edelstein as Executive Producer, Business Development for its interactive arm, ClickFire Media. Edelstein rejoins the company from Stinkdigital, where he served as Director of Business Development for the U.S. He previously was with Click3X in the sales and business department.
 
Former Facebook executive Chris Kelly will now serve as interim CEO for the movie-streaming service’s Fandor. Former CEO Ted Hope left Fandor to work on a new movie production company. Kelly is Fandor’s top investor, and was previously part of FB’s General Counsel and served as Chief Privacy Officer.
