Amazon Studios named the 13 pilots to hit Prime Instant Video this month. They include: hour-long dark comedies Cocked and Mad Dogs, war-drama The Man in the High Castle, half-hour docu-series The New Yorker Presents, Civil War themed Point of Honor, and two half-hour comedies Salem Rogers and Down Dog. Six new kids pilots to land Jan. 15 feature four animated entries and two live-action offerings from creators such as May Chan (Phineas & Ferb) and Carol Greenwald (Arthur). As always, Prime viewers will have the chance to watch and review each pilot to help determine which shows get a chance for a full season.
Showtime’s giving it away the weekend of Friday, January 9-Sunday, January 11. “Free Preview Weekend” offers over 70 million households the chance to try programming on Showtime, Showtime On Demand, Showtime Anytime and select distributors’ TV Everywhere portals. Samplers can access Homeland, The Affair, Penny Dreadful, Ray Donovan, Masters of Sex and Nurse Jackie, as well as movies including the television premiere of Philomena.
At the Citi Media Conference in Las Vegas yesterday, Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam denied recent rumors of a Verizon–AOL buy, and instead hinted at a possible partnership. Bloomberg reported on Monday that Verizon may form a joint venture with AOL.
Buick has signed on as the exclusive launch partner for several digital extensions of Bravo culinary competitions series Best New Restaurant, launching Wednesday, January 21 at 10p. Included: companion video series Secret Service will follow the linear premiere, at 11p on BravoTV.com, while “Social Snaps” aggregate social and editorial conversation around the competitors, host and judge Tom Colicchio, diners and Buick into one destination.
Breakthrough Entertainment’s horror film Antisocial is now available on Hulu. The Black Fawn Films production depicts a New Year’s Eve celebration that turns chaotic when a viral outbreak pushes a group of friends to their limits.
The History Channel’s Vikings will return for season three on Feb. 19 at 10p ET. The first two seasons are available on Hulu and Amazon now, and season two will be on A+E sites and apps starting Jan. 20.
MTV and Applebee’s kicked off the first Ultimate Fan Experience of the New Year with British band Rixton yesterday. Beginning with a series of spots across MTV channels, the ads will push fans to UFE.MTV.com to enter. Last year’s UFE brought in 62,000 entries, thanks to One Direction’s involvement; Miley Cyrus snagged 61,000.

Fandango launched a new movie discovery channel with Hulu yesterday. The streaming service’s subscribers will now have access to original Fandango series FrontRunners, Weekend Ticket, Reel Kids and Mom’s Movie Minute. “We are particularly excited about our deal with Hulu, our first subscription video-on-demand service to offer our original video content,” Fandango Vice President Business Development and Strategy Mark Young told Cynopsis. Fandango recently acquired YouTube channel MovieClips (nine million subscribers).

Verve announced that Raycom Media and Fox Broadcasting Company signed on to use the company’s platform to host their mobile apps. The TV companies join more than 2,000 other media firms using Verve’s native app and mobile web frameworks.
Sorenson Media launched a new suite of digital TV and analytics products called Spark. “With Spark, consumers will be able to access a local broadcaster’s catch-up and VOD content at the click of a button, take part in interactive content such as polls, quizzes and contests and even claim discounts and coupons by clicking on TV ads with their remote control or smartphone,” President and CEO Marcus Liassides said.
The market for 4K ultra high definition TVs is about to explode, according to findings from the U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecast study released Tuesday. Four million units are expected to be shipped this year, over 200 percent more than in 2014.

David Decker has been promoted to Executive Vice President Cable and SVOD Sales at Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. He replaces retiring Tom Cerio, who will remain with the company in a consultant role.
