YouTube celeb Grace Helbig (two million subscribers) will join E! in April 2015 for a new hybrid comedy/talk show. Called The Grace Helbig Project (wt), the show will feature her point-of-view on what’s trending in pop culture as well as interviews with celebrity guests. “Congratulations to E! for giving an internet-obsessed introvert a talk show,” Helbig said. “I’m looking forward to working with humans.” Helbig created the YT series It’s Grace, the web series DailyGrace, the podcast Not Too Deep With Grace Helbig, and starred in the film CampTakota and the Conde Nast series HeyUSA.
Netflix announced its Smart TV certification program, Netflix Recommended TV, to give consumers suggestions on which web-connected sets provide the best performance for its service. Initial partners include Sony Electronics, LG Electronics, Sharp Electronics, Vizo and Roku TVs. Netflix has yet to outline all requirements to be considered in the program, but two include a faster app launch and quicker resumption of video playback.
Dish Network unveiled its new subscription streaming service, Sling TV, at CES yesterday. Set to debut in the first quarter of the year, the product will offer channels from Disney and ESPN, Turner Broadcasting and Scripps Networks Interactive and exclusive content from YouTube and Maker Studios for $20/per month. The cheaper bundles are meant to capture the millennials who wouldn’t subscribe to a pay TV service otherwise, Dish President and CEO Joe Clayton said at a press event on Monday.
New MCN Rush IT Network from Scott Zakarin (The Spot, sit.com and GrapeJam.com) formally launched yesterday. RIN debuted its first scripted series TheSpinOffs on Dec. 1, and is in the final stages of development on six new shows to be introduced at the Sundance Film Festival which takes place from Jan 22-Feb. 1. RIN plans to focus on branded content with advertisers and integrate performances from emerging YouTube and Vine stars, among others.
Yahoo TV snagged The Bachelor host Chris Harrison’s blog about the series. A new post will debut on Yahoo TV every Monday after the latest episode, now in season 19. “I will attempt to continue to entertain, have fun with the show and give you behind-the-scenes tidbits and knowledge you can’t get anywhere else,” Harrison said.

Amazon cancelled the series order for the Chris Carter (The X-Files) drama The After. The show was ordered last March along with five others after it earned good reviews from viewers when the pilot premiered on Amazon Prime last February. The drama was based on eight strangers who had to survive in a violent world; cast included Adrian Pasdar, Sharon Lawrence and Jamie Kennedy. Amazon has “decided not to move forward,” said Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios.
Netflix will debut its latest animated original series with DreamWorks Animation, The Adventures of Puss in Boots. The first five 22-minute eps, based on the character as it appeared in Shrek, will hit the streaming service on Jan. 16. DWA previously created Netflix originals such as Turbo FAST and All Hail King Julien and will premiere DreamWorks Dragons and DinoTrux on the service in the coming year….
….Netflix also nabbed My Own Man, a documentary exec produced by Edward Norton (Birdman) that had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. The personal account of producer/writer David Sampliner’s experience becoming a father launches on the streaming service Friday, March 6.
