Do you know the difference between editorial content and a native ad? If so, you might just be in the minority. According to a new study from researchers at Grady College, people tend to have a great deal of difficulty making the distinction. The researchers displayed 12 different versions of a native ad to test subjects, each ad bearing different disclosure labels, such as “advertising,” “sponsored by,” “brand voice,” and “presented by.” The study found that only 8% of subjects were able to identify native advertising as a paid message. The study also found that consumers are seven times as likely to recognize native advertising when it’s marked with terms such as “sponsored content” or “advertising,” as opposed to “presented by” or “brand voice.”  The study, titled Going Native: Effects of Disclosure Position and Language on the Recognition and Evaluation of Online Native Advertising, ran last month in the Journal of Advertising. VIRTUAL REALITY

 
Lebron James
can cover the court like nobody’s business – but you can’t always see that on a 2D television. That’s where virtual reality comes in handy. Striving for Greatness, a new 12-minute VR documentary about James, has debuted for the Samsung Gear VR headset. The doc was directed by VR studio Felix & Paul, and developed by Oculus Studios and Uninterrupted, the media company co-founded by James. Featuring interviews and footage of James’s training sessions, Striving for Greatness can be downloaded the Oculus Store and the Samsung Milk VR app. 
 
It’s not slam-dunks for Oculus. In a blog post, the company announced that it needs more time to perfect its Oculus Touch hand controls. The Facebook-owned company had been expected to release the new features, which allow users to use their hands in VR-simulation, in Q1 of 2016.  Instead, the Oculus Rift headset will ship with an Xbox One controller in the first quarter; Oculus Touch will debut in the second half of the year.
 
Still more from Oculus: While the initial Rift units won’t come equipped with Oculus Touch, they will come with a new game. Lucky’s Tale, an original title, will be packaged with the headset when it launches in Q1. According to an announcement from Oculus, the new adventure game centers on the titular Lucky, a “fun-loving fox” who traverses “a charming new world, with dozens of locales and lush environments.” (Alas, unlike another legendary video game Fox, Lucky can’t fly.) Lucky’s Tale comes from the Texas-based developer Playful Corp.

CES 2016

 
CES has seized on the talents of two major YouTube content creators.  Justine Ezarik (AKA iJustine) and Joey Graceffa will serve as CES 2016’s ambassadors for Entertainment Matters, presented by Variety. This year’s event runs from January 6-9.

Politicians beware: Politwoops is back on your tail. The service, run by the Sunlight Foundation and the Open State Foundation, was known for rapidly resurfacing embarrassing deleted tweets from politicians, until Twitter shut it down back in June. But Twitter has now reversed course, announcing that Politwoops will be reinstated. So, a note to all 2016 hopefuls: Think twice before you hit “Tweet.”  (Yes, even you, Donald.)
