01/10/19: The NBA, Turner and Twitter Announced a deal to have select second half of games carried live on the platform

Good morning. It’s Thursday January 10, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
 

The NBA, Turner Sports and Twitter announced a live streaming deal that will provide fans in the United States with a complementary experience on Twitter (via @NBAonTNT) for 20 NBA on TNT games this season.  During the second halves of those games, fans can watch the action through a single-player, isolated camera view.  Fans will vote on Twitter for the player they want to see featured during the live stream of select regular-season and playoff games airing on TNT as well as the 2019 NBA All-Star Game.
 
“The NBA Twitter community is among the most vibrant in sports and entertainment,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.  “While watching NBA games on TNT, our fans on Twitter can now enjoy a unique second screen experience that will further enhance the way fans engage with each other and the game.”
 
The live streams will debut during TNT’s presentation of the 2019 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 17, with an ISO-CAM of a fan-voted player. The schedule of regular-season and playoff live streams will be announced at a later date, along with exclusive commentators who will provide analysis for this second screen offering. As part of the expanded relationship, the NBA – through its NBA Digital partnership with Turner – will continue to provide on-demand content from the @NBA Twitter handle, including video of pre-game warmups, in-game and post-game highlights, and behind-the-scenes content.
 
Since the NBA joined Twitter in 2009, the league has built the largest Twitter community of any sports league in the world with 27.5 million followers.
 

ON THE AIR
 
FOX Sports announced the broadcast pairings for games this weekend. The lead team with play-by-play announcer Joe Buck, analyst Troy Aikman, reporters Erin Andrews and Chris Myers along with rules analyst Mike Pereira will call Saturday’s NFC Divisional game. Kevin Burkhardt will team with Charles Davis veteran reporters Pam Oliver and Peter Schrager along with rules analyst Dean Blandino to call Sunday’s NFC Divisional game. Terry Bradshaw and Curt Menefee co-host FOX NFL SUNDAY along analysts Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson, Michael Strahan, Tony Gonzalez and insider Jay Glazer. In addition, Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen will appear as a guest on the set of Sunday’s FOX NFL SUNDAY. FOX Deportes’ broadcast team for games includes host Rodolfo Landeros, Jessi Losada, Rolando Cantu and Jaime Motta. The FOX Deportes pregame show begins 30 minutes prior to kickoff of the Divisional Playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New Orleans Saints.
 
NBC Sports and GOLF Channel unveiled a refreshed graphics package for its slate of live tournament programming across its coverage of professional tours. The graphics package debuted during last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions on the PGA. Highlights include new storytelling devices, making information easier to scan and digest through an optimized “mobile-viewing” lens, more color, bigger fonts and a more effective use of typography for a cleaner viewing experience and greater consistency across the network’s platforms and franchises.
 
IndyCar revealed its 2019 TV schedule with NBC Sports Group, including the races that will be on the NBC broadcast channel. Those eight races are the two events at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the month of May including the Indianapolis 500; the doubleheader at Detroit; Road America; Mid-Ohio; Portland; and Laguna Seca. Portland and Laguna Seca are the final two races of the season, putting the finale on broadcast TV.

The LPGA and Aon announced the hole designations and scoring system on the LPGA Tour for the Aon Risk Reward Challenge, a new performance-based program that serves as Aon’s opening chapter of a multi-year partnership with both the LPGA and PGA TOUR. The season-long Aon Risk Reward Challenge will highlight golfers as they tackle challenging holes across both the LPGA and PGA TOUR. The player from each Tour on top of the Aon leaderboard at the end of the regular season will receive a $1 million prize. Each week, Aon will bring golf fans an in-depth look at the tournament challenge hole by providing an overview of the opportunity it presents, insights derived from data and analysis of past performances and recommended strategic approaches to provide an advantage, helping fans understand how players weigh the risk/reward decisions they face as they take on each hole.
 
Discovery announced the purchase of a 71 per cent controlling stake in Play Sports Group, the firm behind digital cycling media brands Global Cycling Network, Global Mountain Bike Network and Global Triathlon Network.
 
The Florida Cup club soccer competition between Campeonato Brasileiro Série A pair Flamengo and São Paulo, Dutch Eredivisie club Ajax and German Bundesliga team Eintracht Frankfurt  announced a deal with Kin Analytics, who will provide team and player performance advanced analytics reports and updated competition summary during this year’s event, which began in the US Tuesday and runs through to January 13.
 

DIGITAL AND STREAMING
 
Verizon and the NBA announced a new digital-first content offering on Yahoo Sports, which will include a new show called “The Bounce” co-produced by Yahoo Sports, the NBA and Turner. The offering expands on a multi-year partnership that will deliver video streaming offerings of NBA content.
 
Thuuz Sports, using their custom designed algorithms to measure real time global event excitement, determined that the Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints were the most exciting teams throughout the regular season, while the Kansas City Chiefs’ record setting game with the Los Angeles Rams was the most exciting regular season game of 2018.
In terms of most exciting teams, the Eagles and Saints were the only teams to have eight games register as “GREAT” on the excitement scale. Kansas City had seven Great Games make the list, while three non-playoff teams – Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay – joined the Rams with six Great Games each. The measurement scores were done on a 0 to 100 scale and take into consideration game pace, team parity, play novelty, momentum shifts, social buzz, and historical context. The algorithms behind the excitement ratings are statistically calibrated to insure the appropriate distribution of ratings across the course of the season.
 
FloSports announced a partnership with the Ball Sports Group to provide live and on-demand coverage of select SPIRE Institute boys basketball games during the 2019 season, exclusively on FloHoops.com. SPIRE Institute is slated to challenge top competition and powerhouse programs throughout the year, drawing several thousands of fans to games. Ranked recruits fill out the SPIRE Institute roster, including recently enrolled student-athlete, LaMelo Ball, who has returned to high school for his senior year. Another standout player includes Robert Bobroczky, a 7-foot-7-inch Romanian junior center, the tallest high school player in the world.
